password managers in the browser still store them encrypted. They usually authenticate via a passkey, in-built security in the OS like windows hello, or through other services such as SSO through google; That said, if you have them on auto-pilot with this authentication, anyone with access to the device can theoretically access them, though to actually view them in the password manager they usually require you to authenticate.

Browser password managers are sorta less secure than a third party one, assuming you turn on all the convenience features to make your life easier, but a lot of third-party password managers have the same convenience features a lot of the time anyways.

Saving the password in your browser is using a password manager; you're just using the one built into your browser. The safety and security of using any individual password manager is pretty much up to how secure that particular password manager is, but generally speaking they all store passwords encrypted.

Ones built into a browser have the added attack vector of being potentially vulnerable from the browser itself vs a stand alone manager, but if you use a plugin for your favorite password manager they likely share a pretty similar attack vector possibility.

Either way, using a password manager is infinitely better than reusing passwords, so this is really just a long winded way of saying "no, not really".

Dedicated password managers usually come with more security, control, and features, but you're generally going to be fine using the one built into your browser.

The gold market cap has always been the approximate amount of gold that has been extracted. While I don't think anyone can give you an actual precise number, the approximate number is pretty widely known and tracked as we extract more.

The migration is complete and we're up and running. You might notice some small data loss, but hopefully nothing major.

As a recap, our current host is going out of business, so we were required to move to a new one.

As part of this migration, we also moved to using object storage on backblaze instead of local storage.

All of this should mostly be transparent to the users. One thing not transparent is that old.ttrpg.network is currently not back up yet. Not sure when/if we will be able to support it on the new host yet, so stay tuned.

As an aside, this is probably a good time to shill for the site; Due to this migration and change, costs are going up. Not majorly, but still going up none-the-less.

So in light of that, i just want to mention that we have a ko-fi, which currently rakes in a whopping $0 per month (we had some early donations way back in the beginning, but that's two years ago). The site is free to use and will continue to be so, but anything you feel like donating is always appreciated. Even a dollar or two helps.

We will target migrating to a new hosting service this weekend. The site will probably be taken down sometime on 12/12/2025 to perform final backups from our current host and uploading to the new host. The weekend will then be set aside for migration on to the new host.

I don't think it should take longer than sunday 12/14/2025, in fact i would hope it would be done before then, but we will see.

I don't have exact times it will be happening, just depends on how everything lines up.

Hey all, just an update, our object storage migration mentioned in the previous announcement is complete; We should be using the new backend for image storage now and image uploads should be re-enabled.

The next step in our migration will be migrating to a brand new host, which should be happening sometime in the next few weeks.

The actual migration will likely result in down time, but i will give heads up before we start.

Also let me know if you run into any problems or issues

Just an FYI, as part of our migration off of our current host, it's become apparent that we're going to need to migrate our image hosting to object storage.

The change should be rather seamless from the front-end perspective outside of the migration window, but during the migration window, our image hosting capabilities will be offline. I'm not sure how long it will take (the current image hosting data is fairly large) so it could be a bit of a prolonged outage.

Text posts, and commenting should all work, image hosting and thumbnails will be broken. You can still link to external image hosting such as imgur.com, but it won't generate a thumbnail.

I'll update here when it is complete, but as of right now, i would plan for a potential multi-day outage.

there's actually great resources for getting started online. There's a site called start playing games dedicated to matching new people to a DM. Note that services like that cost money. There's also the virtual tabletop roll20 which has a group finder for you to find a game. It will have a mix of free and paid games. Alternatively, you can crowdsource that such as on r/lfg on reddit (unfortunately the LFGs here on lemmy don't seem to be active enough to find games), or through various discord servers, including the official D&D discord. Another that has reasonably active LFG type sections to try is the Fantasy grounds (another VTT) discord.

For in person play, you can also look in to local gaming stores that might run adventurer's league, which is the sort of 'official' play wizards of the coast sanctions at local stores and at conventions.

I haven't heard terribly many people talk about draw steel, honestly. I'd be interested to hear what you think about it after trying it out.

Yeah, i figured it was probably under priced with our current host, but im not looking to balloon costs 4-5x or something when switching to a new host, hopefully. I'd like fully managed if possible, but yeah, another thought was including people who could look at things in my stead, though I don't really have a list of people i'm aware of who i could recruit.

thanks! i'll have to look these over!

Hello! I'm an admin on ttrpg.network. Recently, our hosting provider let us know that they are going out of business. I'm trying to find a new provider to migrate to.

A little bit of information, i would like:

  1. Not to self host - I travel a lot for work, and i can't guarantee that my home internet/server is always available.

  2. Prefer a managed service if possible - Again, due to the above, if something goes wrong while i'm out of town, I might not have time to troubleshoot issues for a week or more.

My current service is a managed service, so I can open tickets if something goes wrong and have their support team look in to it. Googling, the only other service i can find that has managed services is elest.io, which mostly just looks like a wrapper for services like AWS and others, and the server configurations look like they might get pretty pricey to get anything near comparable.

Currently, our instance uses around ~1 TB of data after backup and everything is included, and we have a 4TB quota at our current host, 8 GB of ram, and I'm not entirely sure of the CPU or anything. All for around ~$25 USD/month.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Quite possible. I'm not an expert and working from memory, so I could very well get something wrong

I've just been made aware of this, but as an fyi to the community, our hosting company is going out of business. There's time for us to migrate hosting services, the final date is February of 2026, and they're available for us to assist in migration of our instance, but I wanted to share with everyone, as we might see some down time after figuring out what's next.

Just an FYI, pict-rs (the picture service used by lemmy) will be going down for an upgrade tomorrow morning. It should only last for about an hour or so, during which time image upload, image viewing, thumbnails, etc. will be unavailable. The rest of the services (lemmy, comments, discussion, etc.) will all be available during this time.

Yesterday we had a bit of an outage with image storage on our instance; Got some messages about it at one point, but that said, everything should be back up and running. Is anyone else running in to issues? I had one user mention that they had a problem this morning, but I wanted to see if anyone else was running in to problems.

Let me know! If there's issues, we can get to the bottom of it, and get things hammered out.
