I read through the article, only speculation but since the sound is without a doubt the USB being disconnected then it's pretty obvious an Windows machine running a rom.

Bought a game recently on steam, and it wanted to launch Ubisoft connect after installing - fastest refund I ever requested.
I moved away from Google a quite some time ago and I'm not going back even if they paid me to do it.
