Oops! I did wonder if it could be non-Nvidia. Oh well

I actually have an old laptop with a GTX 780M and a Core i3 3rd Gen running Arch.

When I tried GNOME on it with Fedora, it defaulted to X11 on login when it detected the Nvidia card. However, mine was also an Optimus laptop, and I could mostly always get Wayland working with the iGPU on the Intel. This is how I mostly ran for a year or two without ever using the dGPU.

I need to chuck in a new SSD on that, but I could check it out let you know if anything's changed in recent years. I don't think wayland support for older nvidia cards have even been worked on in the last couple of years. There's work for wayland on newer nvidia cards, but it's mostly still spotty.

Yep I second this. I've been using GNOME, hyprland and sway interchangeably since 2021 Oct on my system as my main DEs. I recently wanted to give Plasma Wayland a try. Was met with multiple crashes, and freezes that required me to long press the power button to reboot to get it working again.

While the new rootless wayland on SDDM worked fine for me, there are several things in Plasma that still don't yet have support for Wayland. I could never get screen sharing to be reliable on Plasma Wayland, despite having the right portals installed.

GNOME, Sway, and Hyprland are miles ahead in having a stable system on Wayland.

I know one guy in one of our Telegram chats that simply loves their Android turtle emoji

The reason I switched from Gboard was because it autocorrected a capital "I" to a small "i"

Asus ZenPhone? Have you been living under a rock these past few months lol

Just wait until Google eventually kills it off lol

IIRC, that is literally just a skinned KDE Connect lol. Probably even just a name change. Never used Zorin, but this is what I remember either DistroTube or Chris Titus saying.

This is usually a function that full blown media servers offer.

Jellyfin is the one that jumps to mind with this functionality, however I haven't really this functionality out as of yet.

You can't look forward to a green future without backwards-compatibility

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like all the Galaxy S23 FE lenses will see an upgrade, but the most important ones should.

  • The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE might get an upgraded selfie camera borrowed from the Galaxy S22 series.
  • This would join the previously leaked upgrade of the primary rear camera.
  • However, the telephoto and ultrawide lenses would likely not see upgrades.

Besides Chrome, Google’s Privacy Sandbox initiative is on Android to let apps show you relevant ads in a more private manner. The beta started earlier this year, and Google is now prompting more users about it with new Ad privacy settings.

Another one bites the dust less than a year after introduction

Back in the day, it was a really great way to find new apps. And by back in the day, I mean when it was still called the Android Market.

Its initial transition to Play Store in the ICS era also wasn't too bad. It still kept a lot of the good things from Android Market. But since the launch of Lollipop, things have really deteriorated. It might not have really been the fault of Google, but there's a lot more noise with subpar apps that crowd the store now. There's also the incessant ads for sketchy apps featured prominently that leaves a bad aftertaste in your mouth.

Like you, I've probably spent like 30 minutes on the Play Store over the last 4 years probably. Every app I want today is either on F-Droid, or already pre-installed on my phone. Or they're PWAs, and it's easy to install them just by going to the website.

Google is testing a curious change to the Play Store on Android that sees a somewhat persistent bottom bar.

Samsung is preparing to launch a second generation of its Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) item tracker, and an FCC filing has revealed the latest details, including the new design.

Several Android brands offer portrait video, but one brand will finally offer something like Apple's Cinematic Mode.

  • Chinese brand Vivo has announced a 4K portrait video mode.
  • This mode will offer automatic subject focus switching like the iPhone’s Cinematic Mode.
  • Vivo claims that you can even change the focus area after shooting a clip.

Nextcloud News, Nextcloud Notes, Nextcloud, and DAVx5/ICSx5. I also really like FairMail; it's one of the best email clients I have tried.

The former set of apps allows me to ditch most of Google's services.

Google's earthquake warning system failed to get to many Turkish residents before February's deadly tremor, a BBC Newsnight investigation has found.

Google says its alert system can give users up to a minute's notice on their phones before an earthquake hits.

It says its alert was sent to millions before the first, biggest quake.

However, the BBC visited three cities in the earthquake zone, speaking to hundreds of people, and didn't find anyone who had received a warning.

The system works on Android phones, essentially any phone that isn't an iPhone. Android phones, which are often more affordable, make up about 80% of the phones in Turkey.

Android is struggling to keep its market share in the United States, as Apple continues to take over in the market. But, despite Android as a whole losing ground, Google Pixel phones are becoming a bigger slice of the US market.

Counterpoint Research reports that, in Q2 2023, US smartphone shipments dropped by 24% year-over-year. That includes both iPhones and Android phones, and virtually every brand saw a drop in shipments. Samsung saw US shipments drop by 37% while Motorola saw a 17% drop. TCL saw the biggest decline at just shy of 70% year-over-year, and even Apple saw a 6% drop.

The Google Maps app for Android has, for years now, had the same old voice input that’s slow and not as accurate as Google’s latest offerings. Finally that’s changing, as Google Maps is rolling out a new voice input experience powered by Google Assistant.

If you were hoping for some additional software flexibility on Google’s new Pixel Tablet, you’re in luck as LineageOS support has just been added.

Available now through the official LineageOS website, you can now download and install the custom ROM on the Google Pixel Tablet. The “tangorpro” builds are based on LineageOS 20 and bring support for added customization and extra features, such as a PIN unlock that changes the order of the numbers on each unlock.

Google Maps is preparing two updates including an Android Auto redesign that’s rolling out now.

Attached to recent Google Maps updates and independent of your Android Auto version, a new design for the Maps app on Android Auto is rolling out. This new design adds a sidebar to the Maps experience in your car where controls live.

Where previous designs showed map controls off to the right side when you interacted with the map, but this new design constantly shows these controls. You’ll see zoom controls, the ability to chance the map’s orientation, adjust what directions are said aloud, and access settings. All of those controls are shown on a translucent bar on the left side of the screen.

Yes, most definitely! It's the reason I avoid Android tablets in general. I have a random Android tablet from Lenovo that runs Lollipop and is stock-ish.

Used it for about a year, and now it sits as a paperweight.
