🌊 We must stop eating wild ocean animals, including open‑pen "farmed" saltwater fish such as salmon. https://environment.yale.edu/news/article/exploring-underbelly-chiles-salmon-farming-industry

If you’re not urgently dependent on seafood for survival, simply switch to other options such as land / closed‑system aquaculture or plant based solutions.

I'm not saying everybody needs to become a vegan/vegetarian right now, that is up to each individual, but we should avoid the worst of the worst.

That is, if we want to at least keep a few of the giants of the seas alive. 🦈🐳🦑🐠🐟🐡🐬🦑🪸🦐

🇺🇸 "Law that has allowed U.S. intelligence agencies to collect... overseas communications without needing search warrants is set to expire"

Here is a completely wild thought: instead of changing or renewing it, how about the USA stops ignoring people's basic rights worldwide? 🤪

Does the world need more billionaires? Guess we will soon find out, as they multiplying now, and not even naturally!

Oh cool! Paused but not forgotten eh friend <3 I guess they still have to prioritize UI work, for me a UI improvement to Lemmy was the main reason for checking it out but I was a bit underwhelmed.

HAHAHAHAHahaha yeah it isn't all that advanced yet ;) I think they use something very very lightweight XD

Only found them by coincidence ;)

1️⃣ In "/settings/preferences/appearance" under "Advanced settings" you can find the option to "Warn me before posting media without alt text"

You can see the error message I see whenever I forget alttext in the second image hehe

2️⃣ When you post an image with text in it, you can simply use the magic AI feature "Add text from image". It usually works very well!

Alt text: "Screenshot of the warning you get with the warning for missing alt enabled. "Add alt text? Your post contains media without alt text. Adding descriptions helps make your content accessible to more people." Below it are 3 buttons "Cancel" "Post anyway" and "Add alt text"

Alt text: "Screenshot of the alt text window, the option "Add text from image" is circled in red.

This is how that "AI" option described the text of the image I posted: "Describe this for people with visual impairments. 1500 Add text from image"

wow this is such a behind the scenes look, thank you very much for that and explaining everything in such detail! I feel like this is one of the very few cases where it's already for "the state" to look up user data, since people actually want and need it to get help :)

[–] madeindex@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

wow that is fast!!! Mastodon is definitely slower in this particular case! Somebody sent me a similar ticket from 2024 ;)

[–] madeindex@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Definitely more effective than every disabled person etc. having to generate it! Have you seen the Mastodon image text to alt text feature? I guess they could simply expand on that?

[–] madeindex@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I guess even a questionmark (with a link to a popular website explaining it) next to the alt-field would suffice.

Mastodon actually already has that, but manually! :)

I've been thinking a lot about the Fediverse ALT issue.

Some people are annoyed by posts without Alttext, & others get reminded¹ to add it.

The core question is: How can we improve accessibility?

Proposal: ☑️ Add a user filter to hide media posts without AltTag ☑️ Reduced engagement on hidden posts would encourage adding Alt text ☑️ People who need accessibility wouldn't have to encounter unlabeled media

If this gets traction, I'll open a Mastodon GitHub issue (maybe on others too?).

"the company admitted it likely won’t be able to keep up with competing models."

"As such, the announcement is a bit of an enigma: if it can’t keep up with the competition, why release it at all? There’s a good change Meta is just trying to get its foot in the door — or a “seat at the big kid’s table,” as Wired put it. The company has struggled to stay relevant in a rapidly changing landscape" "Meta’s preceding Llama open source models largely failed to catch on, with a major controversy last year finding that Meta may have faked benchmark results to make its Llama 4 model seem more capable than it actually was."
