I have suggested that they pull my changes to their version, but they are understandably very busy and didn't have the time to review it, so that unfortunately didn't happen. Many instances have simply switched the version they are running instead.

see if I can pull those bits back out myself.

Might as well just use my version directly :)
It also comes with a bunch of other improvements, bug fixes, and a few new features.

Some of those issues have already been fixed in my fork of mlmym :)

  • federated image_proxy image posts
  • AVIF images

The others haven't, unfortunately. In regards to the paginating issue on comments, I've already made improvements to that, but the underlying issue is due to the way lemmy's comments API works and not easily fixable without introducing a lot more API requests per page view (see #36).

There are browser addons you can use to change the styling on individual sites, like Stylus for Firefox. They require some knowledge of CSS though.

For example, to change the font of the comment input field to your browser's default sans-serif font:

@-moz-document domain("old.lemmy.world") {
  .savecomment textarea {
    font-family: sans-serif;
  }
}

edit: I totally missed that there was already a comment explaining pretty much the exact same thing. Whoops

Oh, that's a client that works directly in emacs, I wasn't aware something like that existed! Thank you for sharing. I had assumed you were simply using a web interface in eww.

What are you using for that? old.lemmy.zip? I would've thought that wouldn't work since it's behind cloudflare, but I just tried it and it does. Interesting.

Thank you for sharing, I wasn't aware of this feature. But to be fair, PieFed has it easier here because it has a ‘main’ frontend (unlike lemmy, where all frontends are third-party as far as the main software is concerned) that you can apply styling to. Even then, it can only work on that main frontend and not any alternate clients.

I really need to follow PieFed more closely, to be honest. It has so much stuff…

edit: actually, I just noticed this:

The custom CSS/JS/Jinja needs to be submitted and approved first, but then a moderator could add it to the community as the official theme.

So I assume an admin has to add it as a possible theme first, right? If that's good enough, I guess something similar could be done in mlmym too. mlmym should already be very easy to style; it doesn't have a skins/themes mechanism, but that's nothing that couldn't be added.

I think I'm still favorable to the addon approach because it would mean that the custom style could work across every mlmym installation without needing admin involvement, but a theme system is also a reasonable compromise.

It doesn't, and due to the way lemmy frontends work, it likely won't ever natively have that feature. Something that might be possible though is a browser addon that applies custom CSS to communities when visiting them through mlmym? But someone would have to make that, and get moderators to submit custom CSS for their communities…

You could try hosting mlmym on a different PC in the same local network maybe? That would allow you to access it without needing HTTPS.
