I have an interest in linguistics and in American dialects in particular, so I was wondering whether the women from the clips below sound to you like born and bred Americans, or whether you would think that at least some of them are foreign-born:

Will the difference between mass-produced glossy garbage and unique results of sustained human effort and productivity become ever more pronounced, leading to a massive increase in the value of the latter in the eyes of not just connoiseurs, but the masses as well?

spoilerThey indeed are! Was there any particular hint that led you to this conclusion?

spoilerCorrect, they are Polish. Except all of them moved to Anglophone countries in young adulthood - none of them is what you would call a heritage speaker.

spoilerI'm afraid not🙂

spoilerIt cannot be Australia, since their native language is not English.

Right, except I asked about their native language, which is not English 🙂

I thought I might share a small phonetic game/challenge with you. All 3 individuals in the attached clips were born and raised in the same country and speak the same native language. Can you tell, based on the peculiarities of their English pronunciation, what language it is?

spoilerIt's neither South Africa nor the UK, though I'm surprised how often the native speakers of this particular language are mistaken for South Africans, given that I can think of hardly any salient connections between the two🙂

The correct answer is:

spoilerPolish. Thanks for your guesses and congratulations to all those who were close or even hit the nail on the head, even if somewhat hesitantingly.

spoilerA fair guess, but no :)

[–] nipawomset@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

spoilerAn interesting and well-argued guess, but I’m afraid it’s nonetheless somewhat off the mark.

spoilerSlavic is a good guess
🙂

spoilerYour deduction is correct. They are Polish.
