A 3D printer without OctoPrint is possible, but useless.

RFC 6762 defines the TLDs you can use safely in a local-only context:

*.intranet
*.internal
*.private
*.corp
*.home
*.lan

Be a selfhosting rebel, but stick to the RFCs!
