Semi-related, it's ridiculous that there's no public transit route to Squamish and Whistler - only private shuttles. Squamish is becoming a bustling commuter town and the Sea-to-Sky traffic is getting more choked every year. BC Transit REALLY needs to set up regular service. Maybe re-activate the fucking train line.

Not only misgendering and not knowing anything, but for me the cherry was the fact that the only thing TFG could think to say about generic_woman was ... that she was hot. What a stupid go-to. Not smart, savvy, interesting... no, she is obviously hot. That is the best compliment.

Unfuck that guy.

Probably thinking of Nikki Minaj or something.

I don't think that is necessarily out of the running yet. OS development is expensive and low profit. Commodification may be inevitable. Control of the shell and GUI, where they can push advertisements and shovelware and telemetry on you, that is profitable.

So in 20 years, 50? I predict proprietary OSes will die out eventually, balance of probability.

They also tend to have linux support. Where the AAA companies want to eat the entire mammoth and scorn the scraps, small companies can thrive off of small prey and the offal. :)

My partner, who makes that trip a lot during winter, responds:

The bike lane on the bridge deck is eventually cleared, but usually not the first day or two after a snowfall. I check the hwy 1 ironworkers webcams, you can usually get an idea of whether it has been cleared by looking at them. On the north shore, the district does not clear bike paths quickly but the city is very good. He can look up the boundaries and plan a route that keeps him mostly in the city.

My opinion: The bridge gets too dicey for my comfort a few days every winter, especially because of the long northbound downhill decent followed by a poor sight line curve. It frosts over much faster than any bike lane on the ground. I recommend putting the bike on a bus to get over the bridge on days when it has snowed recently or if it was wet the day before and temperatures have dropped below 0.

Now do District of North Vancouver, which has been skirting the rules just as badly.

I don't understand how they put Vancouver and Toronto in the same accent group. Quite distinct.

Bugs me that in all of his examples he does the thing for the user instead of having them do it while he guides them through it. I have a 'sit on my hands' rule for cases like that. But it has been a while since I've done desktop support.

As subject. In Gastown, a plane flew over putting out rainbow contrail. Why? O_o

Some festival?

If anyone's interested, I've created a !sfu@lemmy.ca.

Someday, we may have one-sided meme wars!

edit: I just read the sidebar note about contacting the mod team first about advertising. Apologies! Please remove this post with my enthusiastic blessing if you think that this isn't sufficiently relevant to the UBC community.
