If chapters are available for the video, yt-dlp has a command line argument that will split the video into different files, one for each chapter. Quoting a reddit comment:

you need ffmpeg.
how to convert to mp3: wiki
split chapters: --split-chapters
example naming files after chapters: -o "chapter:%(section_number)s %(section_title)s.%(ext)s"
available chapter variables:

section_title (string): Title of the chapter
section_number (numeric): Number of the chapter within the file
section_start (numeric): Start time of the chapter in seconds
section_end (numeric): End time of the chapter in seconds

as i recall, i don't use this myself, it will also keep the original file, which naming depends on the regular -o (use in addition to the -o line with chapter:)

--split-chapters will also work with the timestamps mentioned in the description

Nice, thanks for the suggestion :)

Right, I will try to look for some options in the developer settings

Edit: there are a bunch of bt-related settings in the Dev options menu, most of them are about audio codec, AVRCP/MAP versions, Bluetooth LE, and other options, but unfortunately nothing that sounds like what I'm looking for :')

Hmm that's weird. I bought my Pixel 5 in 2023, the bluetooth devices I own are the same I was using with my previous phone (mostly, four devices: the car's bt-aux adapter, bt speaker, headphones, cool headphones), and they all used to re-connect automatically. Now none of them does lol so I assumed it was an issue with the phone

Hello everyone,

I have a Pixel 5 running Android 14, and I've always had this issue with Bluetooth devices (any device): after the phone disconnects from a device because of proximity (eg. going too far from the device), it never re-connects automatically when I get back into the device's Bluetooth range. I have to manually enter the Bluetooth settings and tap on the device name I want to connect to

This is something that always worked on my previous phone (which was running LineageOS)

Is this supposed to work this way? Can it be fixed? I've tried to look around in the Bluetooth settings but there isn't much to tweak there

aaaah you're right! The Italian translation was a little weird :)

Hello everyone, some time ago I broke the screen of my Pixel 5. I brought it to a repair store, which replaced it, but apparently they did a bad job because since then the proximity sensor started to misbehave (it was working even with the broken screen, unfortunately they refuse to acknowledge that and won't repair it for free, and it costs too much to repair it again).

Well, this sensor is driving me crazy. It works kind of good for calls, but it's almost impossible to play voice messages: the screen continuously flashes, turns on/off every second because of the sensor, and voice messages constantly stops, restart, switch from speaker to ear speaker... it's incredibly frustrating. For some reason Telegram and Signal work good, but on whatsapp and other IMs, it's almost impossible to listen to voice messages without going mad.

I have a Pixel 5 running Andoird 14 (stock, non rooted), and I'm looking for a way to disable the proximity sensor just for one app, or entirely. Searching for a solution on the internet, I've found this 2020 reddit thread describing an Android 11 option to disable all sensors entirely, but apparently it got removed because I cannot find it, or the quick setting tile the post is talking about (it would be a perfect solution!)

I'm sure there's some root/magisk app ops solution that can help, but I would have to root the phone or install a custom firmware, but I'm trying to find a solution that doesn't require that. Unfortunately I have apps that require perfect device integrity and right now I'm stuck on stock android. Any tip on how to solve this?

I am in a similar position, yes. I've resisted for so many years, but Instagram right now is the only place where some of the local organizations I'm interested in post. Clubs, town events, even leftist social centers who are usually sensible to online privacy and megacorp dependence sometimes only have an instagram or facebook page.

Right now I have a text note with the urls to the websites of the instagram pages that don't have a newsletter/RSS feed. And another note with the link to their instagram pages, that I sometimes check out. Luckily you still don't necessarily need to login to access an account's recent posts from the browser, so as long as you periodically clear your cookies, a browser will do.

I also have been trying to convince some of these pages to create an account on Mastodon or use Gancio, if available. Even a Telegram channel would suffice. Some of them (two) did, but stopped to update it after a few months because most reach comes from facebook/instagram and they won't bother to post stuff on another platform

It depends on what you want to edit :P if you just need the basics (sketching, filetrs, resizing, cropping, converting, combining, etc), try ImageToolbox

Correct. It's from https://fedidb.org/, if you scroll down the main page you can find the Software User Distribution pie

The markdown version of that post: https://pastecode.io/s/jdcy039w (you can copy-paste it over the current post body, to preserve formatting and inline links)

Ever since I was a kid, my family had this electric bathroom warmer which has been my best friend for a lot of time. For 15 years, it has been the main reason for me to quickly wake up during school and work days. I needed the warmth and the white noise, even during summer. A few years ago I decided to "quit", because it started too feel a little like an addiction, and not being able to spend at least 10 minutes in front of this thing would mean ruin the entire morning. Quitting wasn't that hard, of course, but ever since I quit I have a severe problem with snoozing alarms. I need at least 30 minutes to wake up, rested or not rested it doesn't matter, I just cannot help myself to step off off the bed as soon as the alarm rings. Tbh I do not see this as a serious problem, cause lukily it doesn't fuck with my usual daily scehdule, but I will soon try to roll up my sleeves and see if I can improve my alarm2bathroom time

Thanks for sharing. What was your daily usage, while you were consuming? How long have you been off off meth?

Keyboards are probably one of the most sensitive apps on our phones, having access and handling practically everything we type. I've stopped using keyboards that require network access and started using only opensource apps a few years ago. What are your favorite, privacy-respecting android keyboards?

So far, I've found these alternatives:

  • AnySoftKeyboard. I've used ASK for years and I've always been very happy with it. Probably the autocorrect could use some improvement. It's definitely the most mature opensource keyboard out there, with the most features and configurations
  • OpenBoard. The one I'm using right now. Easy and fast to configure, quite good auto-correct
  • FlorisBoard. Haven't had the time to try it out extensively so I don't have any opinion about it
  • SimpleKeyboard. It offers the bare minimum one could ask from a keyboard but sometimes you don't actually need more than that
  • AOSP keyboard and LineageOS' fork, that is, the keyboards that come with some ROMs out of the box. They're probably what a lo of people use

These are the alternatives I've been considering. If you know about other opensource keyboards to extend this list, pleas let me know

Pros/cons of each one of the keyboards I've used, based on my usage and preferences:

AFK

  • + the copy/cut/paste tool that I could invoke by swiping up from the space bar
  • + configurable input shortcuts
  • + smaller extra top bar being (and configurable, not just with numbers)
  • + the ability to backup your settings, shortcuts and dictionaries
  • + plenty of themes
  • - maybe the settings are a bit too overwhelming

OpenBoard

  • + it's better at predicting words in my experience (maybe just placebo?)
  • + "drag to delete" gesture on the delete key
  • + configurable input shortcuts
  • + "swipe to move the cursor" gesture on the spacebar
  • - no select/copy/cut/paste tools

FlorisBoard

  • + theme editor
  • + select/copy/cut/paste tools (maybe hidden behind too many taps)
  • + ability to show the numpad using the "dialer layout" instead of having all the numbers on the same row
  • + "drag to delete" gesture on the delete key
  • + "swipe to move the cursor" gesture on the spacebar
  • + actively developed
  • - no autocorrections (yet)
