rM1 began to show signs that its time is almost up, similar to what you have described. It felt sluggish, and cable connectivity was a hit or miss. I'm really glad I upgraded.

If it is your ReMarkable account, you can sign into it on the new device and keep your subscription until it runs out.
The marker wipe is not a bad idea, I might give that a try. I'm too nervous to try any stronger magnets in case it damages the device. Thanks for the tip!
I'm pretty careful, I don't take my remarkable out and about, and I use the book cover from their store. It's been a few days and it doesn't appear to be clearing up :(
