Anyone who's interested in what life on one (or more!) of our two gas giants' ice moons might be like should take a look at 2010 and 2061 by Arthur C. Clarke (oh, and avoid 3001 at all costs!).

Since Mrs. Erinaceus is considering switching, I was going to try and steer her towards Mint, but since she's a gamer and I'm not (I know, boring) perhaps this would not be the best choice? Please tell me more.

Now that almost everyone on planet earth has a small camera with them at all times, it would have been really cool to have discovered some supernatural stuff, be it ghosts, Big Foot, Nessie, whatever (and someone still might, who knows?), but instead all we get is police brutality. 🙁

You could start your own . . .

I don't want to in any way denigrate the hardworking folks who work on WINE, but from personal experience, I have never gotten it to work with anything. I've actually had much better luck with VMs. I believe that WINE itself has a scorecard for how well certain apps behave with it, to wit:

https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=18332

https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=20209

Neither of which sounds terribly promising, unfortunately.

You could probably run Affinity on VirtualBox, but that means still having to deal with Windows, and running a resource-intensive program on it that way can be sort of, well, rickety-feeling.

If GIMP isn't missing any particular features you need, you may just want to steel yourself and get used to the new work flow. In any event, good luck! 🙂

@xorvixen@lemmy.ml: I'm not familiar with Affinity, so unfortunately I can't speak to that. It looks like it's not Linux compatible, but you could always run it in a virtual machine (which, if you're not familiar with, sounds kind of scary and hard, but if I can set one up, I'm fairly confident that just about anyone else can too!).

~~There's also Viva, which is proprietary, but does have a Linux version~~ (actually looks to be more of an InDesign replacement, so scratch that).

You can always go through what AlternativeTo recommends, and see what works best fot you.

What do you feel is missing in GIMP? If, by any chance it's full CMYK support, I believe that Krita has that and possibly other features you may be looking for as well.

@ComradeMiao@lemmy.world: Yeah, I do feel that Linux comes up a bit short in the PDF editing department. Even though it's proprietary, I do really like Master PDF editor, for which I believe there is a free version, but I do think is worth paying for if there's room in your budget for it. Also, have a look at this.

I don't know about games, but I have had the thought in the past that if there were really good alternatives to Adobe products (which for the most part do exist, at least for my needs) that people could quite easily ditch Windows if they wanted to and would never look back. Due to enshittification, I think it's only going to become more and more intrusive over time.

Anyway, hope this helps!

Depending on what you need, I might be able to suggest some Adobe alternatives to you, having just been through this myself.

Post could also be titled "Oh, Smurfette™, baby, come to Papa . . ."

Of course, Papa Smurf must've shaved off his beard, tossed the goofy red hat, and put on some Just for Men hair coloring . . .

Or they could be merfolk, and all this is really happening underwater—who can say for certain?

Or even—how bout this: Andorians with really great tans who both used Just for Men hair coloring and had their horns surgically removed?

If I stare at this long enough, I kind of think that Ms. Blue Ladyperson, whether Andorian, mermaid, or Smurf, might actually be strangling the guy and saying something like "Give me back my bra, goddammit! It's fucking freezing in the garden of earthly delights this time of year!"

So, possibly off-topic here, but any thoughts from the folks at Graphene about the whole Google dev registration/F-Droid kerfuffle? with regard to possibly forking from Android?

Deleting or overwriting the title and content on ml seems to propagate sometimes, but not always.

Don't hit, I really like the idea of the Fediverse and Lemmy in particular--I guess I already sort of knew that things worked this way, but, well, I'd be lying if I didn't say this spooked me a bit.

EDIT: I'm usually pretty good about not rageposting or whatever, so there's not a whole lot of stuff I want to expunge from the record, but there are some tech support type questions that I've asked in the past that now seem to me unbelievably and embarrassingly dumb that I'm not sure I want to have out there!

~~EDIT EDIT: I'd also be lying if I didn't say my eyes were wandering a bit towards raddle.me at this point...~~

EDIT EDIT EDIT: (sorry, feeling kinda punchy over here after too much early-morning ☕️) This reminds me of something from back in the pre-Snowden days, when everything was still mostly htttp and while websurfing I had Wireshark open and saw "http://www.nytimes.com/lifestyle/how-to-get-the-most-enjoyment-from-watching-clown-porn.html" flashing past.

Seriously tho, this is back when I, along with just about everyone else I knew, would say things like "well, yeah, you know, Google, Facebook, the internet, etc., everything's out there in the open, but what can you do?" And then there's the feeling you get when you actually see identifiable stuff like this going out across the wires and you're like "...oh..." 🙁

Not unlike the time when my boss asked me if I liked to listen to Rush:

Me: I haven't really listened to that much of their stuff, although I really like Power Windows.

My boss: No, I meant Rush Limbaugh.

Me: ...oh... 🙁

I can understand why governments would push for something like this after 9/11, though it of course goes without saying that this is a totally unacceptable violation of someone's basic rights. It also goes without saying that governments always want more control over their citizens, but what exactly are they so worried might happen, right now, in 2025 or the near future?
