Hi,

I want to suggest a concept to solve the issue losing our data when an instance shut down. Maybe it already exist.

Problem

When an instance shutdown, you have no way to recovert your account and export your blocklist, subcription...It is too late and lost. You have to start it again, who prepared a backup ? Almost no one because its design was flawed.

Idea

The only solution would be nomadic identity.

I think we, the fediverse, can create a sync app on our computer. Here is the concept :

• flatpak for linux distro agnostic
• fediapp agnostic. we want to support every free software fedi app.

We install it on our computer. Then click on a plus button to add our fedi accounts.

It will ask for 2-3 fields :

• username
• password
• generated-token (not sure if it is useful, security ?)

Then it will sync on our local computer : blocklist, followers, subscription, setting... maybe encrypted for increased security

Later, we can imagine other features as :

• master account
• merging blocklist, subcription between selected account
• exporting posts, comments...
• managing account settings
• mobile app
• support of apple and windows

What do you think ? Can we achieve that ?

The past weeks I have worked on setting up a new Piefed based Fediverse instance: https://nord.pub/.

The main "selling points" of this instance is:

• Operated and hosted in Northern Europe
• Committed to avoiding US-based infrastructure and cloud products
• Powered by Piefed

It is open to the world; the Nordic focus is quite loose and is mainly about geographic hosting and having a few Topics with communities in the Nordic languages. The main language will be English since that is the language of the vast majority of the Fediverse.

Community creation is open but I will not be creating any local communities that would "compete" with communities on other existing instances. However anyone who wants to create a community on this instance is free to do so, as long as it follows the rules.

After hosting RetroLemmy.com for close to 3 years, we are proud to announce we now have also opened up a PieFed instance called Retrofed.

This is not meant to replace RetroLemmy, but instead give retro-minded people a choice.

Also, Retrofed is available and fully functional on http as well as https. Meaning old hardware should be able to connect and interact with retrofed if people so wish.

Hey everyone, the attached link is my write-up about the plans for a new community I am trying to get established.
Since I know a lot of people don't actually follow links to read articles, I'll copy and paste some stuff here:

My ideal for this platform is to build a space that values creativity, learning, and working/tinkering at various projects - whatever that may be, from arts and crafts, to software development, to 3D printing, to scientific research. As the forum title suggests, "UnfinishedProjects" is meant to bring people together to share what they are working on, provide a network to collaborate and work together, and just overall enjoy the journey and make some friends along the way.

The forum is not meant to be a "hyper-niche" space, but instead a place for creatives and tinkerers (the kind of people who always have three half-finished projects sitting on their desk) to come together. While the forum has a slight leaning towards the open source and Creative Commons space, to support the "Libre" community - it's meant to be more of a general philosophy rather than a strict gate-keeping measure.

To initially get started, I am using a free hosting platform, but as soon as I am sure the community has enough members who are committed to the community, I plan on transferring over to nodeBB which has native support for Fediverse integration.

Also, addressing the questions of "why not just create a Lemmy/PieFed instance":

Let me start off by saying that I recognize that mega-forum platforms like Reddit, Lemmy, and PieFed exist, and serve an important function. While Lemmy and PieFed have yet to gain traction, I personally hope that they might eventually mature enough to replace Reddit - but as of now, Reddit is a central platform that allows users to find almost any sub for a random topic, and get questions answered from other people who are also interested in that specific niche. This is great, and I think this is where mega-forums excel.

However, I feel that individual forums (like this one that I am trying to create) have very much died off, with the exception of some already well established and long lived ones (BoardGameGeek, I'm looking at you). What I think a personal forum like this has to offer that mega-forums do not, is the permanence and commitment from its members - generally leading to a smaller but more tightly-knit community and network of individuals. On mega-forums like Reddit, it is so easy for members to move from one sub to another, and get lost in the "social-media" type of posts and memes that detract from the intent of any one specific forum.

Additionally, subs on these platforms are often hyper-niche, which can offer a lot of benefits, but a traditional forum may provide a better place to bring people together from various skill sets, interests, and hobbies to share and encourage one another.

If this is something that you think you might be interested in supporting, I kindly ask that you might be willing to join our community and help us build a place that we can all be proud to participate in.

Hi everyone :)

The first fediverse hackathon ended. We did translation, some wanted to create a new software or feature. Pretty cool for a event announced the last minute. :)

Usually the hackathon last few days and everyone spend their whole week-end on developping few features, documentation...but that's not how i imagine it.

Two days is kinda short and only give a little boost. 😁

We will organise the fedihack at the beggining of every month. Our aims is to invite new users to contribute to the fediverse and of course meeting each other IRL and have fun like CHATONS do.

CHATONS (kittens) is a collective network of associations that purpose service based on free software. However, we also organize meeting, coordinate our skills for managing the server, or take action against big tech service as gmail, meet people and invite them to the fediverse.

That would be my dream for the upcoming year. ☺️

Summary for Users

Improve the RSS feeds: they should be faster, you can also get a combined feed of threads and microblogs now

The search should be a lot faster now and you can also search for magazines and users by their URL again (previously you could only search for their handle)

Likes, dislikes and boosts of Mastodon posts can now be extracted, however Mastodon does not sent us updates if these values change

We added a discoverability setting for users and magazines. This setting is activated by default. If disabled you and your content cannot be found by searching and do not appear on /all

Fix comments from Mastodon posts not appearing

Threads and microblogs can now be locked

The combined view should look more coherent.

We adjusted the way microblog posts are displayed in this view

The notification switches now have a tooltip

We added an indexable setting for users and magazines. This setting is also activated by default. If disabled, search engines are advised to not index the corresponding threads and microblogs. Because you can only set this on a page to page basis and your comments appear on the page of threads or microblogs, the indexability of comments is dependent on the thread or microblog you're commenting on

The random magazine is now pre-selected when creating a microblog

Each magazine has a Tags page in which moderators of the magazine can set the hashtags by which microblogs are put in this magazine.

Previously we used the name as a tag as well, without telling the user and without a way to disable it. We now add the name of each magazine to its tags page to make this behavior clear and to provide a way to disable it.

When creating a magazine, we added a checkbox to add the name as a hashtag
Infinite scroll is now working on the search page and the profile pages

The magazine rules field is now officially deprecated. If a magazine currently has this field populated, it will still be editable, otherwise this field is removed. It will be removed in the future, as there is not a good way to federate this field to other servers. At the moment we just append it to the description with a ### Rules in front of it

Summary for Server Admins

Signup notifications should be created correctly again. We previously introduced a bug preventing these notifications from being sent
Add some problematic paths to the robots.txt, which should result in fewer hits by crawlers (like, dislike, boost, search, ...)

We removed some indexes from the DB which should result in some size savings

We also added some missing indexes, which resulted in some performance hits. If you run in any conflicts, we created a command to fix errors for duplicate users or magazines (see documentation)

We reduced the amount of requests to other instances in the background jobs -> should run faster

Summary for developers

Mbin:

Improve CI by just doing nothing in some actions if there are no relevant files changes -> the required actions still run, they just don't do anything

App:

The subject of the magazine log API is now correctly set in case of a pinned, unpinned, banned, unbanned, moderator add and moderator removed "events". The documentation should reflect that now. See #1951

When supplying a rules value in the MagazineUpdateApi, but the magazine did not already have rules defined, the API will throw an error, because this field is now deprecated

There are new endpoints to lock a thread and a microblog post

There also are new OAuth scopes for locking and we added a missing one for pinning microblog posts

Fediverse:

Having a single URL instead of an array of URLs in the to and cc field are now supported. JSON-LD allows this for array fields
Like Activities use the magazine id instead of followers collection in the to field
We no longer include the activity streams namespace twice (once in the @context and once in the /context.json)

Effective reddit advertisement and discussion on r/degoogle, r/buyfromEU, and a Canadian subreddit (forgot the name) boosted piefed.social and piefed.ca primarily. I'd like to see more of this if people know viable subreddits, and help spread the load too across many servers. Currently piefed.social has about 50%+ of all piefed users. This is too much long-term.

It's something I've been thinking about lately. The older, bigger or more aggressive in its crawling an instance is, the more information it tends to hold.

And the information to feed this "engine" easily comes from several places, the posts and summarizations users make, tracker bots including their syndicated posts' bodies of text, bridged contents from other protocols, dead instances whose posts can still be fetched, and who knows what else.

While slow and often incomplete at first, any given instance should have the tendency to become a library at an exponential rate. And if using some site software that can properly include the different types of posts together, the amount of stuff tracked grows even more.

Build some better search engine to work on top of what's fetched by this potential instance and voilà, a search engine not dependent of Bing or Google's API.

Makes sense to me, but what do you guys think?

As you know, we purposed you an hackathon for the fediverse. Two days is short, you may not have free time. Its goal is not speed up development and create lousy code and documentation. No.

The main idea is to form some team and contribute together on some project at the beginning of each month : wiki, translation, documentation, coding...

I hope that it will turn out as a recurring event later. :3

Why ? I believe it will attract new users, contributors to the fediverse, and i hope news people will join us...and make free software shine. I believe in free software, i believe its 4 freedoms can improve our democracy and protect users rights.

Let's go back to the hackathon. Some may prefer a slow spaced development, they are right, it is a rock solid development. Its goal is not to replace its current development. we want to invite new people being part of the fediverse, guide them, explain them how they can contribute and slowly being part of the free software movement.

There is plenty way to contribute and i hope it will invite news contributors if we organize a recurring event. :3
