Sure, the best way to learn is someone explaining the game to you live, but thats not always available.

What do you do? Read the manual, watch videos or something else? Any specific creator to recommend?

For a quick solo Gloomhaven experience! There was a similar print and play version called Gloomholdin‘.

Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs is a solo play game, with an original campaign story written by Isaac Childres, that features a playstyle similar to Gloomhaven in a fraction of the size.

Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs is set after the events of Gloomhaven and Forgotten Circles. The Aesther recluse Hail has earned a reputation for being highly instrumental in saving the city from recurring disasters, and she absolutely hates it. Wannabe heroes are constantly barging in on her studies at the Crooked Bone, looking for help in becoming famous themselves — not to mention all the demons that come by looking for vengeance. She briefly considered moving, but as that would require effort, she instead just placed an enchantment on her front door: Anyone who attempts to open it becomes miniaturized and therefore is no longer a problem.

Your character is one such wannabe hero. In an ill-advised attempt at fame, they try to visit Hail, and poof. Now they're the size of a mouse and have entered an entirely different realm of lawlessness and self-preservation. They must find a new way into the Crooked Bone to convince Hail to return them to their previous size.

Each scenario is a single card, pitting one mercenary against a handful of enemies with simplified actions and AI. Each mercenary has a hand of just four double-sided cards, but they can be used twice — both the front and the back — before they are discarded. Attacks are resolved using a die in conjunction with a modifier table, and both the table and the mercenary ability cards can be improved as you level up throughout the campaign.

I very much enjoyed the original Bang! and it's additions. I want something that feels like the shooting dice equivalent to Bangs! Poker. How good is the dice version and are there other games that are better but share the direction?

I was putting my collection back together after redecorating over the weekend and noticed a distinct lack of worker placement games in my collection!

We've played (and enjoyed!) Architects of the West Kingdom and Tiny Epic Dinosaurs in the past, but both belong to a friends collection and don't want to overlap with them.

What worker placement games do you own and enjoy?

I enjoy trading card games a lot, and was wondering if there was such a board game that could capture that feeling at higher player counts (without spending money on booster packs)

Think Radlands, but for 3-4 players

I haven't been able to post review in the last fiew days, life got in the way. Hopefully this week goes better!

Today's game is Lovecraft Letter.

TL;DR

Score: 9/10

Positives:

  • Very easy to teach

  • Very fast

  • Light-hearted

  • Very nice components

Negatives:

  • Some folks really dislike "accusing", they won't like this game

The Review

Lovecraft Letter combines the classic Love Letter game with an H.P. Lovecraft theme. This isn't just one of those simple Batman re-themes, if feels more like an expansion to Love Letter.

Image credit to Petra on bgg, source here

The goal of the game is to be the last surviving person. In your turn you will draw a card and play one of the 2 cards in your hand. Each card has a number and an associated action that you can perform. For instance, the card number 1 lets you attempt to guess someone else's card and if you succeed they are out of the game. The number 8 card cannot be played and if you are ever forced to discard it you lose the game. Though the game has player elimination, the rounds are very quick and it won't take long before you play again. If there were no cards left to be drawn, the person with the highest numbered card wins.

In the base Love Letter game, this was the entire game and boy did we enjoy playing it. It felt really great to play after a longer and heavier game. It's just such a chill and light-hearted fun game. You don't have to think too much, we mostly didn't even care too much about odds or anything. Folks just like to accuse me of being a Princess and that was fun. Sometimes we ended playing Love Letter for the entire evening. It was great but eventually we burned out a bit.

That's when Lovecraft Letter was released. The game is essentially the same but it adds a push your luck mechanic. Now there is an additional 8 alternative, green cards (1 for each number). Playing or discarding one of these alternative cards will leave you insane. The green cards will now have VERY strong abilities at your disposal, however you will need to do a sanity check before each of your turns. For each green card you have played/discarded you have to flip a card from the deck... if it's a green or 8 card you just lose. It was such a simple and subtle twist in the game but it REALLY refreshed the game for us. If I have a green card in hand do I want to risk using its amazing power? It will certainly pay off.... If you survive long enough to use it!

The components are great for the price. The game comes with a really neat box, a nice organizer, sleeves and poker chips. You're set. If, for some reason, you don't like the push your luck component added in Lovecraft Letter, you can still play base Love Letter just by removing the green cards.

I have really great memories playing this game for so many evenings with my friends. I still don't get how such a simple game hooked us so hard, but it really did. You can teach this game to anyone, it's so easy and plays in like 5 minutes. Can't recommend it enough!

Context Information

Number of plays: Certainly 100+

Suggested player count: 4+

Average playtime: A single game is like 5 minutes and if you win 2 games as insane or 3 games as sane you are the ultimate winner. Sometimes it takes a while to find the winner, depending on the number of players, but each individual game is super fast.

Honorable mentions:

  • Fantasy Realms - Trying to build combos is super fun

  • Arboretum - I tend not to like "mean" games, but I don't think one is as mean as people make it out to be. I love building my Arboretum!

##FAQ

I live in Bolivia/Canada/Ecuador/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!

Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.

Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?

Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.

Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?

Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).

Can I donate all my money to you?

No

Can you help me promote my game?

Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.

Your list is full of errors and now I keep rolling natural 1s!

Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on thoughts and prayers, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

found on the RPG magazine on Kbin, some decent OC. Trying to drum up an audience for D&D across Lemmy, the subs I've seen seem fairly inactive.

What's your favorite D20 system based game that isn't D&D?

Not sure if the community is interested in deal posts and digital implementations so why not try both?

The Steam Summer Sale is on and it includes a bunch of digital boardgame implementations. Unfortunately the "boardgame" and "tabletop" user tags are a bit polluted so have to wade through the noise. Here are some standouts I see (USD prices), please add yours in the comments.

  • Aeon's End - $1.94 ~~$14.99~~
  • One Deck Dungeon $0.99 ~~9.99~~
  • Scythe - $7.99 ~~$17.99~~
  • Sentinels of the Multiverse $0.99 ~~9.99~~
  • Spirit Island $12.48 ~~24.99~~ (all time low I believe)
  • Tabletop Simulator - $9.99 ~~$19.99~~
  • Wingspan $9.99 ~~19.99~~

Note that some publishers do matching sales on mobile so for example One Deck Dungeon is on sale on Android too.

Edit: relevant BGG forum post with some more

My son's 5th birthday is coming up and I would like to gift him a board game. Usually only the two of us play and he likes for example Carcassonne Junior, Brandon the Nrave or Karuba Junior. Any good suggestions for a new game, maybe also something collaborative?

Your favorite lightweight game at the moment

Your favorite game of medium weight at the moment!

Your favorite heavyweight game at the moment!

Your most played game of all time!

Your favorite game of all time!

========== Here‘s my list:

  • King of Tokyo: Awesome art, great table presence, easy to learn, different winning conditions, always fun!

  • Tidal Blades: I love asymmetric RPGs with character customization! But I only got it to the table once. Time will tell if it holds up.

  • Arkham Horror LCG: My heaviest game atm, since I don’t find enough time for longer games. The most immersive game I played so far! I‘m impressed how this game is designed and I love my depressing roguelike experience with Lovecraft theme here!

  • Most played: Dominion.

  • World of Warcraft - The Board Game has to be my all time favorite: It reminds me of times, when we had opportunities almost monthly to get together and play these long games. Again, customizable asymmetric characters, thrilling item management and fighting mechanic, skill trees (expansion), everything I loved about the PC game was so well captured here.

I find it interesting to see how board games change to coinside with the times. Some examples below. Please excuse anything I may have wrong as this is solely from memory and I can follow sources if you feel I recalled something wrong. I'm also not a good writer so I apologize for any poor wording regarding a particular topic, and will delete this topic if needed.

I come across many demos and copies of various editions so I have a habit of looking at all the little things.

  • Puerto Rico's latest edition had prototype images of purple colonists instead of brown at one point. The latest edition also changes the concept of colonists arriving on a ship to a work office where they get a paying job to work.

  • Sid Meier's Civilization 2009 Edition by Fantasy Flight Games had an odd one: at some point Mao Zedong was replaced with Wu Zetain. No gameplay changes, just an image swap, which I rarely see in a board game as it seems costly to make such a small change and go through all the processes to get it proofed then resume production. A user on the BGG.com page for this game said it was related to overseas manufacturing having an issue depicting Mao in a situation where he could lose. (Can link the BGG page if interested). That is the only source I could find, and I doubt it would be easy to track down an old FFG employee to get better info.

  • Great Western Trail 2nd Edition replaced TeePees with Outlaws and diversifies the workers.

  • MicroMacro's first printing in the US had Ages 8+ on it. The second printing changed it to 10+ and added a symbol on the cases to signify how family friendly it was, but everything else is exactly the same Not sure if other languages made this change.

  • the game Scout supposedly delayed a printing at the height of it's Spiel Des Jahres hype in the US in order to make more readable (colorblind friendly?) Cards.

  • Splendor added gem symbols next to the numbers in the cards to be monochrome friendly, which seems to be a trend with Asmodee as they have their own logo for colorblind friendly games. And might just be me but the chips feel slightly lighter, can't confirm

  • Among all the other changes in Cash N Guns edition, the rule of shouting Banzai in the rulebook during the hold up is gone. At first I just thought it shortens the rulebook, but I also recall FFG ending the Banzai shouting at L5R events, but I haven't been to a regional event myself so I might have read it all wrong from memory.

Some other things of note:

  • Deception Murder in Hong Kong has a "newspaper" card. My friend saw it, laughed, and said it translated to the headline for Tiannamen Square. This makes me wonder if it's still in the lastest 2023 printing of it's still manufactured in China

  • Battle Cry by Avalon Hill/Hasbro seemed to disappear without a trace and no comments at all about it. The Gettysburg games by Academy games are STILL on preorder with ACD for the past 4-5 years I think. Battle Cry had a lot of Union and Confederate flag stickers you put on the flag poles.

  • The board game Endeavor back in the late 00's mentioned in the rulebook I read about the use of slavery tokens in the game and how it related to the times.

  • Carnegie mentions in the rules intro how it stresses how the game only focuses on the positive aspects of Carnegie.

What are some little changes you have noticed in printings of games that most die hard board games might miss?

I have four Uwe Rosenberg games. Three of those follow a similar format: game title on top, then a line, then some dude, another line, publisher logo. But Feast For Odin had to go and be all creative and unique.

I am looking for a simple card game that would be fun for the elderly and at the same time would break the monotony of traditional card games, that they are currently playing. Preferably something internationally popular so it is easy to buy in the EU.

Edit: Thanks everyone. I bought The Crew and noted a lot of other games. Hope it will go well :)

Today's game is Spirit Island

TL;DR

Score: 9/10

Positives:

  • Gorgeous artwork

  • Theme fits great in the game

  • Very thinky

  • Tons of difficulty adjustments and scenarios

Negatives:

  • The upkeep of this game is very high

  • Prone to Analysis Paralysis

  • Quarterbacking/Alpha gaming is nearly impossible but it's still really important to discuss how to approach each turn; Not everyone enjoys that

The Review

In Spirit Island you play as a magical spirit of the island. Your task is to protect the land and its native tribes from the colonizing invaders. The objective of the game is to wipe the colonizers or inflict so much fear they give up. If the colonizers spread too much or you run out of time, you lose the game.

This game is really special. The artwork is absolutely amazing and fits the theme really really well. The Spirits feel REALLY different from eachother, they totally change the way you play the game. Some Spirits are more focused on defending the land from colonist attacks, others are really good at killing enemy units and others play more of a supporting role.

At the start of game you are very weak. You have very limited range, and your starting cards are probably not very powerful. It quickly starts to feel like it's an impossible task and you're going to lose. Part of the island is going to be permanently corrupted and it's going to feel bad.

It's nearly impossible to be an alpha gamer in this game because your decisions are already too complex, you would be totally overwhelmed if you tried to control everyone else's. That said, while all actions can be performed simultaneously, it's very important to communicate your intentions with your team mates. Say you can wipe 1 of 2 possible areas. It's important to communicate that ability with your team mates because maybe someone else is more restricted than you and can only deal with 1 of those areas. Not everyone enjoys this interaction but I truly believe it's key to success.

As the game goes on you will be spreading your influence across the island and acquiring new and more powerful cards. You will start to feel like a god and the game starts to feel easy. It's quite an interesting arc, really. The game comes with a ton of difficulty adjustments but the arc always seems to be the same: you start miserable and thinking the game is impossible but you clutch it out and win when game is nearly over.

I really love the hard decisions in this game. You want to save the entire island, you want to kill every colonizer, you want it all to be perfect. That's not going to happen, the game is designed for that not to happen. You're going to have to make sacrifices and try your best to deal with the threats while gaining some much needed power. I love that aspect of the game. The Spirits are really unique with clever little names. My favorite spirit is "Ocean's Hungry Grasp" and it's so fun because your gameplay neatly simulates the ocean waves. It's amazing.

The one thing that knocks a point out of this game is the "invader phase" upkeek. Spreading colonizers and disease is a REALLY boring step and very prone to errors. It doesn't seem too much in the first couple of turns but it really starts to become a dreadful task that you perform every single round. For this reason, I really don't recommend the first expansion. You need to add even more stuff to add to the board and has yet another upkeep step. There's a Steam adaptation of the game which probably solves this problem but I tend not to enjoy digital adaptations of boardgames.

Context Information

Number of Plays: 15

Suggested player count: 2-3 players, 4 is fine if everyone knows how to play and no one suffers from AP

Average playtime: 2.5 hours

Win-rate: 93.3%

Honorable Mentions

  • Aeon's End: The New Age - Really fun deckbuilding game with the unique novelty that you DO NOT shuffle your deck. Once you play all your deck you simply flip it, no shuffle. Great game. There are a ton of Aeon's End games, I played The new Age and The Outcasts. I recommend The new Age, felt like a better game.

  • The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine - Trick tacking games are played a lot in Portugal. Every family owns a deck of cards and everyone can play "Sueca". This game feels like cooperative "Sueca" and we had a blast playing it. I also played a bit of the second one but I find the simple design of the first one a lot better.

  • The Shipwreck Arcana - Forgot to mention this one! This is a very clever cooperative deduction game. Small box, small prize, amazing game. It's a solid 9/10 for me as well.

For those that didn't see my reddit post a while back, I made my own extension for the Civilization a new dawn boardgame, with around 90 event cards, 36 great people cards, and a new Era Score system (obviously all inspired by the video-game).

For those that don't want to print everything, I'm making a webapp: Civ gametable.top

BTW: The black deck box is full of Unstable Unicorns and it's expansions.

Finally got the Wingspan Nesting Box. It fits all the current expansions and has room for the future. I swear it must clock in at like 20lbs.

Still a little annoyed that all the Wingspan stuff that holds sleeved cards won’t fit the mote or less widely available and “standard” sleeves (Wingspan cards are not the same size as many other games) but thats not really anything a little 3D printing can’t fix.

Today's game is Azul. I won't be doing a best abstract game list because Azul is also my favorite abstract strategy game.

TL;DR

Score: 9/10

Positives

  • Easy to teach

  • Very nice tactile experience

  • Interesting gameplay for both casual and heavier gamers

  • Fast turns, low-ish downtime

  • Drafting tiles is fun

Negatives

  • You have to fill the factories with new tiles every round

  • Some people like to "hate draft" (ie: take a piece that is useless to you but very useful to your opponent) and not everyone enjoys that interaction

  • I wish the board was double-layered, especially the scoring part of the board. It's very easy to misplace your scoring cube by accident.

The review

Family games are very important to me. They are not the type of game I enjoy the most, but it's pretty much the only type of games my family would enjoy. I find that fantastic family weight games are hard to come by. They need to be easy to teach, simple enough my family members would enjoy and complex enough that I don't get bored to death. I think Azul nails it perfectly.

In Azul, you are a tile-laying artist and you are decorating the walls Royal Palace of Evora, in Portugal. I'm portuguese myself so naturally I imediately felt compelled to try it. You have your own personal wall that you will be decorating with differently colored wall tiles.

The premise of the game is rather simple but I don't want to go into in a great detail. Lets face it, if you're here you probably already know exactly what Azul is and how to play it.

There are several "factories" placed at the center of the table, each containing 4 wall tiles. There are 5 different wall tile color/patterns. During your turn you select a color/pattern of a specific factory and take ALL the tiles of the chosen color/pattern. The rest if tiles are placed at the center of the table, which now acts as an additional factory. The tiles you chose are placed on your personal board.

The order in which you fill your personal board is of critical importance because you get extra points by placing a tile adjacent to other tiles you placed before. Sometimes it's tempting to just pick that factory with 3 yellow tiles, but maybe you wouldn't get any adjacency bonus so it's not a great decision. This is were Azul completely nails it. The more casual folks will not give it much thought and just grab the yellow tiles and they've have a blast filling their personal board. The more experienced players will try to put the pieces in the best order in the board and have a fun min-maxing experience as well.

I feel like in Azul you have just the right amount of the randomness expected in a family-weight game and a brilliantly achieved balance on decisions vs complexity.

The pieces are very nice, it feels great to shuffle the pieces in the bag, and handling them feels great. The quality of the pieces is an important part on the enjoyment of the game. The player boards, however, could be better. Scoring is marked with a standard cube and it's very easy to accidently misplace it.

In case you are wondering, I also tried Azul: Glass of Sintra and Azul: Summer Pavilion. While the games are similar, they fail at nailing that crazy simple yet captivating gameplay original Azul has. Azul: Glass of Sintra is fine but I wouldn't recommend Summer Pavilion. Also, the "Joker tiles" mini-expansion is quite meh.

Honorable mentions

  • Century: Spice Road - I can't believe this game is only rank 308. Engine building at family weight? Count me iiin.

  • Ticket to Ride - Europe - Can't argue with the classics. I like the Europe version in particular because it's more forgiving and you know.. I'm from europe...

On a rainy day at the office I brought the board out and taught a friend. We can generally fit a full game into an hour. It's totally worth it for the weird looks everyone gives us.

It can happen to anyone: a friend of a friend joins for the evening and suddenly Catan is not an option.

What are your goto games in those situations?
