Thanks

My last earphones were galaxy ear buds 2 and they were just bad, once i dropped them the left on stopped working, the naise cancelling made a screeching sound. I was wondering what i should get for my next pair that isnt as bad as what i have now are.

Just curious about this since they kind of look open back but I'm not quite sure? I don't have them in person so It's harder to tell.

Thanks for all the replies and insults on the first post. I don't really use IEMS. I have old pairs of Shure 846, Sony Z5 and the Audeze isine20. Recently got back into the hobby again after a long break. Bought the Audeze i3 (which will melt your brain good) and it's my main driver. I started looking for a closed IEM to use on occasion. I am not that big of a gearhead. I just enjoy nice music for the most part.

The Variations was pretty talked up in r/headphones like it's the bull's bollocks. I saw fellow countryman Crinacle rated it very highly. The guy really knows his stuff right? Beating about the bush is not a common trait here. How badly can this turn out? Well. It's boring. It does sound 500 dollarsish and nah it's not great. It's okay, passable. It's all my fault though. I bought it online without testing it first. I am used to Sennheisers and Audezes. That pretty much usually is a question of did it meet your expectations or exceed them? SQ is not the issue. It's $500 built like a $100 one.

Anyway back to the story.

I passed by the shop I bought it from and went to check with them.

Me: Hi, I bought a set of Variations about a month ago. The damn faceplate dropped off while the IEM stayed in my ear.

Shop Guy: Yep. (Not a hint of surprise) It's just a little glue holding it.

Me: So what do people do in such cases? Do they bring it back, you send it moondrop for RMA? I'll receive one equally bad? Should I just superglue it?

Shop Guy: Superglue it. Save the trouble.

Me: What would you recommend over the Variations? I want something with body to it.

Shop Guy goes on to recommend a couple of Chinese IEMs. Explaining what to expect. I lost interest really fast but noticed that everything recommended was half the price of the Variations or less. There you go, boys and girls. Don't buy the higher-priced Chinese stuff. Apparently, the recommended ones are somewhere in the $250 range. They seem determined to have a race to the bottom. By this time next year. You'll get the same quality for half of that. After that, it'll melt in the rain and most of the companies will be bankrupt.

I did test the Truthear Nova. Which appears to be talked up here like it's a pair of bear's bollocks. LOL. I get it, different yardstick. I wanted to try the Arya Organics, which wasn't available to test. I did try the Edition XS. It sounded great. The build quality however was hilarious. I am going to stick to something more familiar like Audeze or Sennheiser.

I'll like to thank everybody for allowing me to vent. Really appreciate. What do you think about Chi-fi? Love it? Hate it? Good for the hobby? Just a money grab? The guy (or gal) who called me a sucker for buying anything other than an APPLE airpod might be right. The Nova sounds like ........., I will pick the airpods non pro over it. I am very confused.

First of all, sorry if it is a dumb question but I have not found any satisfying answer regarding the matter.

I currently rock the 6xx with the E10k and they are really good for vocals and instruments. The bass is enough but I have realized that turning the bass boost does elevate the impressiveness at the expense of detail. I mostly listen to instruments and vocals so details are always my priority.

The problem is bass is that if I increase it, it lingers too long and drowns out the smaller details in the strings or rustling leaves for example. Is there a way to increase bass but make it dissipate quicker if that makes sense? Increasing bass makes it like the bass is reverberating in a big room. Kinda like putting the bass drum of an orchestra in a acoustically treated room so you hear the powerful bass but it does not reverberate too much to drown out the strings. I hope that makes sense.

Correct me on this but on my limited understanding, EQing means changing the decibels of the frequency? If so, maybe EQing certain frequency for certain loudness would solve that? So the louder bass is punchy but when it fades, it fades quickly because frequency is the same regardless of loudness?

Thanks in advance.

My rig is IEC60318-4 coupler. Sadly a person that sent my those forgot to include spare tips, so I had to measure them classic 711 way, so without pinna even tho they are shallow fit. Although Space Travel tips fit just fine, they do not have additional rubber that covers nozzle exit, so they may affect the sound.

I will measure ANC as soon as I get the tips and can fit it on pinna with seal.

While CanJam Dallas is going on this weekend, another audio show is happening much closer to home, Capital Audiofest in the Washington DC suburbs. It's mostly a speaker and hi-fi-focused show, so there weren't as many headphones there as in CanJam, but the upside is that there's less competition for the headphone stations. There was usually no line to demo things. I tried a number of headphones, many that I've been wanting to try for a long time. I'll give some brief impressions of each, along with some bonus comments from a friend who went with me and my wife. If anyone has questions, ask away in the comments.

Stax SR-X9000: The highlight of the show for me. It would win on comfort alone. It's so comfortable, with minimal excess clamp force and little vertical pressure either. No hotspots here! It's very open-sounding, with a layered presentation to sound, good soundstaging, and surprisingly good bass. I think the only issue I might have is that vocals seem pretty forward and emphasized here, but they have this sense of "floating in front of me" that lessens the irritation. It ticks basically every box in my list of good sound qualities. I'll definitely pick this up at some point.

Modhouse Audio Tungsten single-sided: Generally a good-sounding headphone that doesn't pair well with zero-feedback amps for me. Soundstaging and vocals were pretty intimate when listening on the CFA3 in zero-feedback mode, but flipping the switch to enable feedback moved vocals further back and made the headphone much easier to listen to. Nothing really stands out in the sound though; solid and weighty bass, inoffensive vocals, inoffensive treble. Good or bad depending on perspective. However, it requires huge amounts of power. Harder to drive than the Susvara!

Hifiman Susvara (on HeadAmp GSX): This is very good, but probably too similar overall to my Shangri-La Jr to have both. Susvara has more bass and a bit more incisiveness in the treble as well as a slightly richer midrange. SGL Jr has slightly wider/deeper soundstaging and openness and a bit more of a "delicate" sound. Wish I had brought my SGL to the show to compare directly, but I didn't have a good carrying case.

Abyss AB-1266 TC: Subwoofer on the head. Hilarious bass response. Extremely awkward to put on due to rigid headband structure and very uncomfortable. You also look like a Cyberman from Doctor Who while wearing them.
Bonus: my friend thought that the 1266 was by far the most memorable headphone at the show. He thought it was the only one where its bass approached that of speakers. Every other headphone's bass sounds like "headphone bass", while the 1266 had a bit of that "speaker bass".

Meze Empyrean 2: Disappointing. It's lost the distinctive Meze sound of the Empyrean/Elite, and has oddly soft bass impact. The X9000 has more "snap" and "slam" in the attack of bass notes than the Empy 2. I'd take either the "dreamy" and bassy sound of the original Empryean or the slightly sharper sound of the Elite over the Empyrean 2.
Bonus: my friend was also disappointed in the Empyrean 2. He thought it sounded "sterile". He thought the Elite was better even if it was noticeably coloring the sound.

Dan Clark Audio Stealth: Surprisingly poor comfort, unsurprisingly dull sound. There's a hotpot from the headband at the top of my head. Thought it would be more comfortable than the Aeon 2, but it's actually worse overall even though the earpads are better. Sound was meh, with the distinctive DCA dampened sound that makes everything sound kind of dead. I guess if you're a midrange fanatic like Dan Clark, then it would make sense, or if you're used to the sound of instruments in acoustically damped recording rooms, but I don't think it renders music in a convincing way. It's like a marble statue of a person, vs a living, breathing person with all of their quirks and flaws.

Dan Clark Audio Corina: More comfortable than the Stealth, but similar issues with the sound. I guess I'm just allergic to the DCA house sound. Compared to the X9000, it feels constricted in sound placement, it lacks the layering, and it lacks the air and openness of how notes decay. If you just want to focus on midrange, then sure, it's a different sound than your quintessential estat, but I wouldn't pick this over the X9000.

Audeze LCD-5: Very good bass, a bit shouty in the vocal range, not the most open sound and kind of average soundstage. I'm not the biggest fan of Audeze's new tuning direction.
Bonus: my wife liked the tapered earpads. She says it places less pressure on the jaw under/behind her ears. She wishes more headphones would do this.

Audeze MM-500 and MM-100: The 100 is more comfortable, and the 500 is slightly more incisive in notes with a more pronounced midrange while the 100 sounds a bit softer with a bit less emphasis on small midrange details. Both have the same general tuning I'd actually take the 100 over the 500, since I'm not a music producer who needs to mix the midrange with such precision.

Sony MDR-Z1R: Bassy, spacious, and slightly sharp in the treble. More comfortable than my MDR-Z7M2, more pronounced bass, and there's a bit of sharpness in the treble that comes out in some songs (e.g. "Titanium" by David Guetta feat. Sia). Other than that, it sort of takes all of the qualities of my MDR-Z7M2 up one notch. I might pick this up, as I quite liked the sound.
Bonus: my friend really didn't like the Z1R. He thought entire frequency ranges were missing when listening to it. He also wasn't a fan of my Z7M2.

Sennheiser HD820: Sounds fine. The soundstaging was great and the bass was good too. Female vocals were a bit more resonant and "breathy" (e.g. "Rolling In The Deep" by Adele). I compared it back-to-back with the DCA Ether 2 and I would actually pick the HD820 over the Ether 2 when listening to Adele. I didn't get a chance to try it with male vocals this time, and in a previous demo that's where it sort of fell apart and sounded very strange, like the vocalist went up one pitch.

Conclusion: I need to pick up Adele's album '21' ASAP. I used "Rolling In The Deep" as a demo song since one setup didn't have internet, and I realized that it sounds awesome. I've heard it on the radio many times back when it was the song du jour, but I have never realized how good it sounds on good audio gear.

I've just picked up a Fiio BTR3k, I love it. But, the volume out of the 3k compared to even my laptop is way less. I don't listen to music loud, usually 65% MAX, but I can comfortably listen to my 7hz Salnotes zero at 85% out of the Fiio. The same goes with my Grado 60x's. The btr3k gives a noticeable bump in sound quality, especially with the zeros and the convenience is amazing. Does anybody know why this is happening?

I currently have these old pair of sonys, the whch710n, but I’ve been wanting to upgrade especially with the black friday sales going on. I’m a uni student and I do take transit so I was wondering which headphones have been NC, the song wh1000xn4s or the bose quiet comfort 45s? The bose ones are cheaper but I’m not sure about the sound quality :(

Pixel Tablet > Apple Music > ddHifi USB C to USB B cable > Shanling EM5 > VE Elysium

Initially I bought the Shanling and Pixel Tablet for completely different reasons. The tablet was to replace my ageing Google Home Hub, and I was hoping to run Apple Music directly off the Shanling as a standalone streamer.

Unfortunately, the interface on the Shanling is extremely slow and clunky, and because of the lag, certain parts of playback would be choppy on Apple Music. From there emerged a (happy) marriage of convenience. Though not initially intended, the EM5 now serves mainly as a USB DAC/AMP, and the Pixel takes over as streaming source, while also doubling as my smart home hub.

I want to buy earpads for the SHP9600 and I'm not really sure if i want to go with the soft feel or the mesh feel. To be honest I've never actually felt what mesh feels like but I bet its kind of cold/comfy but that's just a guess, like I said I don't know how it feels.

also I'm going to be buying Misodiko earpads, I heard about them from a reddit post, but if someone recommends a better or maybe just alternative because I don't know too much about them and they seem to be a little too expensive for earpads.

What did everyone end up getting? This is my first venture into IEM's mainly to upgrade from the Bluetooth Sony's I was using before. I got the Moondrop Dawn Pro and KZ X HBB PR2's !(I know I know but they were 16 quid and I wanted to try planar's for cheap. I'll EQ out any harshness on my devices as well as some micropore tape on the nozzles)

Hey everyone, I recently released my first collaboration IEM, the DUNU Mirai, so I thought it’d be a fun opportunity to answer some questions about what shaped its development. I’ll also be happy to take questions about anything else pertaining to audio!

On my way to Fuji, got my Asahi Super Dry, bento box and Masayoshi Takanaka. Can't go wrong with this combination.

Saw him live on the 28th of October. Such an amazing experience. Much better live than his studio recordings. I can't stress enough how great it was to see him play that guitar.

Sounds pretty great with my Penon Serial. Not as good as my HE1000 Stealths obvioisly but the Penons are definitely a lot more portable.

Hope everyone is enjoying their music as much as I am <3

First time going to CanJam, this has been a fantastic experience! So many headphones at one place? Surely that only exists on this sub, right? But, alas, I got to experience so many headphones (to the point that I can't really tell anymore). So, let me summarize my experience a bit.

What this post is: My (inexperienced) experiences and rants.

What this posy is not: Definitive answers to anything, really.

TLDR: STAX SR009S good; HD820 bad. Bass and vocals good; sibilance bad. Also, I just don't understand Meze Empyrean.

Test tracks:

  • Soothing by Laura Marling
  • Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson
  • Starboy by Weeknd (ft. Daft Punk)
  • Titanium by David Guetta ft. Sia
  • And other ones I came upon but not familiar with.

Caveats:

I haven't tried many headphones at CanJam yet. Also, I'm no way near experienced in audio or gear. I daily drive a pair of 58X and that's about it. I also can't really say much about DACs and AMPs since I don't have much experience with them.

Awards

My favorite: STAX SR009S. Man, these drivers are fast! This is perhaps the only time that my jaw dropped when I heard a pair of headphones. I couldn't properly gauge the details given the short time period and noisy environment, but I will say this is easily one of the most impressive presentation I heard today. For fast tracks, each note hits so quickly. Maybe the only downside is the lack of intimate and thick vocals, but I will reserve my judgement on that. I have yet to try all the other STAXs, and I really need to.

Best Bass: TH900 MKII. For bass heads, this is a dream. I mean the sub bass is intense. I daily drive a 58X, and I heard sub bass that I never heard before. This headphone has its flaws of course: the sibilance is bad at times, and the treble is just too much. I can stand a few minutes of rumbling fun, but I don't think they will work for some songs. I need to give LCD5 another listen and see if I stand corrected on this category.

Best Display: ZMF. A whole room of beautiful headphones? Yes please. I only got to hear the Caldera today, and I liked it a lot. I think it is one of the only ones that left an impression of good vocals combined with all the planar goodness. It somewhat reminds of the Sennheiser sound, but just better.

Worst pads: Grado pads. I tried one of their flat pats, and they are just uncomfortable. They feel like hugging industrial carpet with your ears. Really, Reddit is correct: get alternative new pads.

What I don't Like: HD820. They don't have a chance next to the 800S. Pass.

What I don't understand: Meze Empyrean. I'm a little baffled. I heard this headphones three times today (if I'm not mistaken). One time was an unfamiliar track but properly driven (it was just meh?). I literally wrote "Not much an impression on me". Another time I thought they were not properly drive. Finally, I was at the Meze booth and tried them on the Ferrum stack. Now we are talking, but I still vastly prefer the Meze 109 (which is very good). To me, the Empyrean is a bit too warm, almost claustrophobic at times. Maybe I need more time.

What I want to try: Hifimans, Focals, many more ZMF and STAXs. Maybe some IEMs as well?

Statistics

Let's get this out of the way! To keep track of what I heard and what my thoughts are, I had a form in my phone for every headphone I listened to! At the end, I gave each experience a score from 0 to 10. Obviously no headphone got 0s (only reserved for awkward silence) and one particular headphone did get a 10. There are a few headphones that I heard multiple times (possibly with different sources), and each time I gave a separately. Also, there is obvious bias, especially those I heard early on. So bear with me, and I really need to get some another go. Now, let's look at the scores each headphone get:

Averaged scores of each headphone.

Caveats: I don't think I have a good handle on LCD headphones, evident by their all-over-the-place scores. Also, I didn't spend much time on the LCD5, which I listened to on an unfamiliar track.

Here is an overall distribution of all the scores:

Distribution of Scores.

Conclusions

This post is getting long, and I hope people enjoyed the useless statistics and rants! Obviously I have a long way to go on this journey, but at least, this is a good start! Chime in if you too have impressions from CanJam!!

I would like to purchase a topping l30 II which has a 6.35 headphone output, but my headphones have a balanced 4.4 cable.
How can I do?

I don't find 6.35 to 4.4 adapter but only 6.35 to 3.5 and 4.4 to 3.5

They’ve been out of stock and selling for $45-$50 for a couple months. I just wanted to post for anybody wanting them for a second pair or gifts.
