I don't know the rules in detail but a correct reason is usually:

The game clocks starts when they inbound the ball.

The shot clock (they have 24 second to launch a shot, ie hit the basket rim or make a basket) starts when they touch the ball after it is inbounded.

So if there were 30 seconds left in the game, if you 'walk the dog' for 6 seconds after the inbound and then use 24 seconds to make a basket, the other team has no time to score a shot in the possession. Otherwise they would've had 6 seconds
