It seems most ppl want success just for the flex. I see it all the time. I grew up in mostly affluent areas. I never saw my parents' generation make money, then immediately broadcast it to the world. Yes, these ppl have nice homes and cars, but this generation is different. Ppl that make no money try to flex wealth. We live in the attention economy it seems.
I see the money for the flex stuff on the internet and such, but growing up in a dying midwest town with 10kish population where your options were go to community college if you could afford it, factory work, or military and move away (and I still live in the same town sadly), I have seen so many people try and start a business to try and get out. There are a couple success stories but most don't make it past the first year, mostly due to lack of customers. Of course a few kids went to a real college but that was due to generational wealth of the established businesses in the town. Also rich people moving to the low cost of living area after gaining their wealth is decently common here.
I never really saw a success for a flex situation here. It probably happened. But I just saw people wanting to escape or get by without having to put 50 hours a week into one of the 30 factories in and just outside the town. I think the graduating class for the college hasn't exceeded 50 graduates in a hundred years. I have definitely experienced the hustle porn but only online due to where I live.
I grew up in a house and a community that, for various reasons, go out of their way to HIDE any wealth to avoid the appearance of showing off. This can cause some psychological issues as well…but growing up that way it’s strange to see people who just want to APPEAR wealthy even if they aren’t. It’s the complete opposite. 😂
