What instance of Lemmy would you recommend to use, lemmy world or something else? (lemmy.world)

I'm still trying to get used to Lemmy; the main thing confusing me is the federated bit.

I just want to access Lemmy and its content; how do I do that? Currently I'm just going to old.lemmy.world and using that as a starting point.

Is there another instance you would recommend as the default one?

The two main reasons I ask are:

  1. I want to know if there are things I am simply missing out on and there's a better way to browse Lemmy.

  2. I really don't like cloudflare and have it disabled in Javascript. I don't want to leave it enabled for lemmy.world.

You should be able to see pretty much anything from any instance. That's kind of the point :)

Currently I'm just going to old.lemmy.world and using that as a starting point.

It's worth noting that old.lemmy.world doesn't use my fork of mlmym (yet? I should write to them about this), so you are missing out on a few features, most notably user preferences, which you'll need to go to the normal lemmy.world UI for. But that shouldn't generally be a problem.

  1. I really don't like cloudflare and have it disabled in Javascript. I don't want to leave it enabled for lemmy.world.

I don't remember right now whether lemmy.world uses cloudflare (it looks like it does, for mlmym at least). There are probably other instances that don't use it, but most will use some kind of anti-bot system. In the end, it's a matter of choosing the option you're most comfortable with :)

mlmym itself shouldn't need any JavaScript, although some things will be slightly nicer with it enabled (voting, replying, and so on don't require a page reload, for example).

Our https://old.slrpnk.net/ should currently work without any javascript, but we might have to add additional anti-scraper protection in the future if Iocaine becomes ineffective against an aggressive scraper.

Thanks, this seems like a good option. I appreciate teh old.reddit like interface that old.lemmy.world also has

  1. I can't log in with this account to slrpnk.net. Should I create a new account, or am I doing something wrong?

  2. A very minor minor comment; one thing I don't like about old.slrpnk.net & old.lemmy.world, is the site by default loads to hot posts. I found the active tab to be far more interesting; there is more engaging discussion that I can learn from. If perhaps due to a cookie setting or something, the site could default to the active tab; I (and possibly others) will appreciate it.

  3. I know I said 2, but I'm still struggling to understand the concept of instances. So slrpnk.net is a separate world from Lemmy.world right? Can I engage in lemmy.world's content or no?

I apologize, I have another follow up question (again all stemming from failing to grasp an intuitive understanding of federation) to point 1.

I'm fairly sure I was able to sign on lemmy.cafe and make a post in a community over there.

Basically I am trying to understand why was I able to do that there and not at slrpnk.net. Is it something unique to lemmy.cafe? Something unique to slrpnk.net?

Pretty sure you misremember, as Lemmy.cafe also requires registration to be used. There are some independant frontends (web-clients) that can be used with different Lemmy instances, but for password security reasons I strongly recommend to only use the ones hosted by the instance you have your account on, because otherwise you are basically sharing your password with whoever runs that frontend.

In other words, exactly how do I get lemmy.world content on slrpnk.net?

Lemmy.world sends your post to slrpnk.net if someone there is subscribed to this community and thus I can see it in my client just as any other local post.
