I'm still trying to get used to Lemmy; the main thing confusing me is the federated bit.

I just want to access Lemmy and its content; how do I do that? Currently I'm just going to old.lemmy.world and using that as a starting point.

Is there another instance you would recommend as the default one?

The two main reasons I ask are:

  1. I want to know if there are things I am simply missing out on and there's a better way to browse Lemmy.

  2. I really don't like cloudflare and have it disabled in Javascript. I don't want to leave it enabled for lemmy.world.

.world blocks the more extreme communist instances like lemmygrad.ml and hexbear.net, so you're missing any interaction and opinions of those people.

See this thread for what instances do not defederate. You can always block people, communities and instances yourself.

sh.itjust.works is pretty good. Not as weirdly moderated as Lemmy.world which seems weirdly right wing with very odd moderation decisions.

Things to know about:

  • instances can defederate and block other instances. I don't really like that decision being made for me. There was a website to help check (input an instance and it tells you which others have defederated). I forget the website now, but I used it to check around before signing up.

  • an instance can die. Lemm.ee was a pretty big instance and the maintainer didn't have time anymore. So the plug was pulled and that's the post and comment history gone and start a search for a new instance. So worth looking for something that doesn't hinge on one or 2 individuals to avoid this.

  • might also be worth looking at where the server is to see what sort of privacy issues that causes.

People would like Lemmy to be successful and think federated platforms are great, but they do come with drawbacks alongside the strengths and it's not easy for normies to navigate.

At the end of the day, you don't have to overconpkicate things and you're likely going to be fine signing up to Lemmy.world

Not entirely true, you can still see post and comment histories on instances that federated with lemm.ee for instance my old lemm.ee account @mathemachristian@lemm.ee

I think Lemmy.zip has a policy to stay federated with as much of the Fediverse as they can, so that might be an option.

In general I tend to recommend smaller, either interest-specifc or local, language-specific instances first, though, as using those lets you actually utilise the /Local feed the way it's intended.

[–] CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml 4 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Though they're the only instance UK folk cannot access.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ah right, I forgot that. VPNs work though, don't they?

[–] CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago

I don't know. Don't use a VPN for browsing Lemmy.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago

what's stopping them from accessing other instances?

[–] Kierunkowy74@piefed.zip 1 points 5 days ago

Recommend feddit.uk for them. You are welcome.

Just make accounts wherever and stick with the one that you like the most tbh. That's the beauty of the fediverse, the many options can seem daunting but you don't have to choose one! I have this account to interact with lemmy.ml directly, I have a blahaj account to interact with the wider fediverse while getting transphobes and the worst of the reactionaries filtered I have a hexbear account to interact with hexbear. I like the hexbear community the most, it's probably the most one that is a community within itself with multiple sub-communities but it's of course a matter of taste. The most choice you get from lemmy.zip I believe which is the most widely federated one and stays out of drama. There is dbzer0 the more anarchist oriented instance. Lemmy.world is the most reddit one I feel like both in tone and moderation. But just make acounts wherever it doesn't matter.

I'd be fine with world. If you aren't, maybe sopuli.

I don't think most instances run alternative frontends so if you want them to provide the old reddit thing, your list of options might be short.

You should be able to see pretty much anything from any instance. That's kind of the point :)

Currently I'm just going to old.lemmy.world and using that as a starting point.

It's worth noting that old.lemmy.world doesn't use my fork of mlmym (yet? I should write to them about this), so you are missing out on a few features, most notably user preferences, which you'll need to go to the normal lemmy.world UI for. But that shouldn't generally be a problem.

  1. I really don't like cloudflare and have it disabled in Javascript. I don't want to leave it enabled for lemmy.world.

I don't remember right now whether lemmy.world uses cloudflare (it looks like it does, for mlmym at least). There are probably other instances that don't use it, but most will use some kind of anti-bot system. In the end, it's a matter of choosing the option you're most comfortable with :)

mlmym itself shouldn't need any JavaScript, although some things will be slightly nicer with it enabled (voting, replying, and so on don't require a page reload, for example).

Our https://old.slrpnk.net/ should currently work without any javascript, but we might have to add additional anti-scraper protection in the future if Iocaine becomes ineffective against an aggressive scraper.

[–] orvorn@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 days ago

Highly recommend slrpnk as an instance! I've had a great experience.

[–] mehquestion@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Thanks, this seems like a good option. I appreciate teh old.reddit like interface that old.lemmy.world also has

Two comments

  1. I can't log in with this account to slrpnk.net. Should I create a new account, or am I doing something wrong?

  2. A very minor minor comment; one thing I don't like about old.slrpnk.net & old.lemmy.world, is the site by default loads to hot posts. I found the active tab to be far more interesting; there is more engaging discussion that I can learn from. If perhaps due to a cookie setting or something, the site could default to the active tab; I (and possibly others) will appreciate it.

  3. I know I said 2, but I'm still struggling to understand the concept of instances. So slrpnk.net is a separate world from Lemmy.world right? Can I engage in lemmy.world's content or no?

You can set this on the preferences page :)

Oh man thank you so much on both fronts (for your other post also)

Small simple things that make the entire thing so much easier

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)
  1. Yes, you need a new account
  2. Not sure, maybe there is a setting
  3. Federation makes it possible to interact with lemmy.world from slrpnk.net
[–] mehquestion@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I apologize, I have another follow up question (again all stemming from failing to grasp an intuitive understanding of federation) to point 1.

I'm fairly sure I was able to sign on lemmy.cafe and make a post in a community over there.

Basically I am trying to understand why was I able to do that there and not at slrpnk.net. Is it something unique to lemmy.cafe? Something unique to slrpnk.net?

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 4 points 4 days ago

Pretty sure you misremember, as Lemmy.cafe also requires registration to be used. There are some independant frontends (web-clients) that can be used with different Lemmy instances, but for password security reasons I strongly recommend to only use the ones hosted by the instance you have your account on, because otherwise you are basically sharing your password with whoever runs that frontend.

[–] mehquestion@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Another stupid follow up question (related to 2.)

How did you see this post?

In other words, exactly how do I get lemmy.world content on slrpnk.net?

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago

Lemmy.world sends your post to slrpnk.net if someone there is subscribed to this community and thus I can see it in my client just as any other local post.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

i like it here

[–] gedfromgont@piefed.ca 1 points 4 days ago

I can maybe piggyback on your question as I was just wondering myself if there is any page that summarizes how many other instances a lemmy instance is blocking plus how many other instances are blocking that instance. Not sure I wrote this very elegantly.

Basically I know you go to a instance homepage and you can go see which ones they are blocking on some subpage somewhere. But you obviously cannot see a list of which ones are blocking this instance? Or is this the same?
