Great! Now AI is going to hallucinate products and if you don't pay attention, you'll be overcharged. Since it's "self-checkout", I bet they'll claim it's totally your responsibility to make sure you're not ripped.

Self checkouts don't use agentic AIs / LLMs that hallucinate permanently. As mich as I hate AI, that's one of the cases where the distinct types matter.

Image recognition software has been around for ages and was used for similar things way before the AI hype. The models used for selfcheckouts are highly specialised and have an error rate very close to 0%. That doesnt mean they can't make any errors, but the same goes for human cashiers.

A SCO I use regularly loves ringing the third b2g1 item as something different. I swear it hallucinates to avoid sales.
