Whenever I feel bad about EU politics I just need to take a peek at the US to feel better
Careful, we do that in Canada and it makes it very hard to have a conversation when your “centrist”(very conservative) party does a bunch of truly awful shit and half the country pulls “but it’s better than Trump!” put of their ass instead of actually doing anything meaningful.
Your governments are looking at the US and taking notes.

Yup, we're the far-right testing ground. We were settled by religious extremists whose shit views got them chased out of town.
The persecution was everyone being sick of their shit.
Don't let the right wing claim the past and the future. "We" are also the people that fought like hell to kick those other peoples asses and add another verse in the song of freedom. "Our" values are also the ones that say we deserve equality by default. That liberty is an inherent right. Etc etc.
That's where a large part of John Oliver's viewership comes from.
