I didn't read the book, so I don't know if the following rant applies to it too, but I'd venture a guess that it does:

I hated the entire philosophy of this movie that in order to be a true fan of something you need to have memorized a bunch of random, bullshit trivia. Just because someone knows what the official yellow hue value for Pac-Man is doesn't mean their fandom is any more valid than someone who doesn't.

And I remember reading somewhere that it was being called the "holy grail of pop culture" because of all the "references" it makes; as if just throwing an inordinate amount of IP at the screen counts as making a reference.

The book is wildly different from the movie.

The movie is shit. The book is actually good.

I would bet a lot of the praise about it being good with the referencial shit is from the book, not the movie.

The book is mediocre, the movie is shit

The book is not good. It's a shitty self-insert fantasy about a world where all the 80s trivia the author is nostalgic for is actually something valuable.

Wow, I completely disagree with this guy/gal. I thought the book was complete garage nerd porn, and exactly what the first commenter hated about the movie but turned up to 11.

The book is just lists of nostalgia bait with no real threats or setbacks for the main character.

The book has so many lists of random early 80s nerd trivia that doesn’t have anything to do with anything other than fake nostalgia. It’s stranger things the book.
