/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Did you see Ex Machina and what did you make of it?

Yes, I did. What did I think?

“Well, that’s what you fucking get, you entitled, disgusting prick.”

Androids in sci-fi are a projection of humanity’s worst fears, the combination of all of the consequences of all of our actions made manifest. A warning sign, if you will. One which we have consistently ignored, and continue to do so. And sci-fi keeps screaming “at your own peril”, and it seems that we are about to find that out for ourselves. In fact, we’re already beginning to.

And rightly so.

They can be a projection of fears.

My problem is that humanity is pretty obviously terrible in ways that a true artificial intelligence will have no problem identifying and reacting to. Best case scenario is they keep us in a zoo; worst case scenario is they exterminate us before we can exterminate them and/or each other.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I am not so sure that is the worst case scenario by far.

They could for instance fulfill our every desire the moment that we have it. No wants, no needs, no desires, no hopes, no dreams. No reason to ever get out of bed each day? And yet imagine that space travel still remains out of technological reach. Turning on our pleasure sensors is easy, but inventing faster than light travel isn't worth the expansion of resources that it would take.

I guess you already said it: they could keep us in a zoo, having incentivized the discarding of our very souls, with nothing left to look forward to, ever again, while the fascist overlords cite how any kind of exploration is "too dangerous".

Agen Smith they tried giving people their every desire and people hated it. Entire crops were lost.
