There are always those players that a lot of fans haven't realized have gotten washed and are therefore shocked when they are traded/released, or players that simply aren't worth the cap hit. So which are those players for your favorite team?

Maybe Lockett. He's due to make $27M next season and while his play hasn't necessarily dropped off, he has talked about not wanting to play until he's old and also got his real estate license last year. The FO cut Wagner in 2022 which makes me think he isn't safe considering we'll have lots of holes to fill.

As it sits he also would have the 8th highest cap hit among receivers next season and while I love the guy, I don't know that he's worth it at that price.

One of the most underrated players in the league

Wouldn’t Metcalf be even more expensive than Lockett?

[–] four0nefive@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

His cap hit is $24.5M in 2024, so slightly less expensive. While he's a bit more inconsistent and a step away from truly being elite, he's obviously younger and his best season is better than any individual season Lockett has had (and earned him a 2nd team All Pro nod).

If you cut him or trade him its the same dead cap and the team trading for him would only have to pay him 15 million in 2024 and 25. I could see you guys seeing if you could trade him like KC.

Send him to the chiefs

Without a restructured contract, I don’t think this is that surprising for anyone paying attention. The FO is clearly focused on getting younger and rebuilding, and while TL is a big culture/leadership guy, the price tag is too high moving forward. Based on his own words about wanting to retire soon, and the drafting of JSN who seems like a de facto eventual replacement, I think his time with the Hawks is nearing the end. It’ll suck, but it’s part of the business.

But they’d have to trade him somewhere (for basically nothing but here please take this contract off our hands) for that to make sense right?

Currently his contract runs through 2025, but after next year the cap hit to cut him drops from roughly $20M to $10M which I think could be when they part ways if he doesn’t just retire. I’m not sure if Tyler would even want to be traded at this point in his career, and I agree that his salary makes it unlikely that they could recoup much for moving him so I think it’s more likely he stays for another year and then is either cut or hangs it up but the writing is on the wall with how the team has been rebuilding imo.

Seahawks also drafted JSN last year. I bet they didn’t draft him to be the #3 guy. He’s 100% Lockett’s replacement.

As a hawks fan, I want to downvote this. But I know you are right 😕
