This measures sea ice around antarctica. It is winter there, and it is very unusual to have a period of over 0C at the time of year (happening right now), but it has a thinner outter perimeter that is vulnerable to breaking away and floating off to warmer water.
There is no relevance to ice sheet stability at this time of year, which is at its strongest.
