The only part that makes your comparison absurd is the fact that there's nothing special about 2006.
In your head, right now, imagine the 1950s. There's a distinct style you're seeing, isn't there?
Now picture 2006. How is the image any different than today, besides the cars today being computers on wheels?
We would be glorifing 2006, if there was anything worthwhile about it.
emo kids and hip hop of the era. frosted tips, lots of hairgel.
there was a lot of stuff that was different back then. The stuff that was fun was also in its infancy.
You could really get a home loan too.
Eh frosted tips were around for a good decade by then. Emo is hard to separate from alt. You didn’t name an example of the hip hop from that era so…
Do I have to be an expert in things I dislike? Emo was definitely different to generic alternative, the swoopy hairstyle and dominating MySpace being a factor. If you want the stuff I knew more about, metal core was also big back then and thankfully pewtered out, meanwhile tech death gathered more and more steam and had it's moment in the sun in the 2010s
That was around the time everyone started using nokias where I grew up. I can find a distinct vibe for 2000s (2006 is 2000s). That's the time where the distinct SMS writing style was born for teens. That's something that is long gone nowadays.
No smartphones, or at least they weren't common. (I was a weirdo who carried a PDA everywhere)
Which probably explains why vintage turn of the century tech is becoming popular.
You're right, the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s all had distinct styles. That started fading in the 90s, and unless you look closely, the nearly three decades since are all very similar.
I think we can rightly blame capitalism for homogenizing our culture, and spreading it around the world. And, even if we can't, I still will, and also fuck Mark Zuckerberg just because I haven't said it yet today.
It’s the death of channels like MTV and the emergence of the internet that specific subcultures are not defining the decades anymore. Subcultures still exist they just aren’t shown on mass media anymore since people live in their own bubble on the internet.
And if you think about it the reason why certain styles defined the decades of post war 20th century was capitalism. Certain sub cultures reached mainstream status because marketeers pushed it to the masses to make money. Like grunge or gangsta rap wouldn’t have reached the suburban teens if business men weren’t pushing it on mass media.
You aren’t seeing the right thing. We just spread out into subcultures
The 90s had a very distinct style just like the other decades you mentioned - grunge. Then going into 2000s it was crap like Pink and Avril
That you have no more neurones to understand or tell the differences don't mean that there are no differences at all. Nu-metal was a big thing in the early 2000's, along with the rising of electronic dance music, ambient music and intelligent dance music by the hands of those like Tiësto, Infected Mushroom, (who were one of the first duos of psytrance), Skream, Benga, Aphex Twin, amongst others. Then modern dubstep (badly called brostep), big room and electro house exploded in the 2010s, with post-dubstep (thanks to James Blake), metalcore, trap and the like giving their first steps too, and now since 2020 we're seeing arise genres as color bass, the asian rock and pop scenes, hardwave, and more, and between 2010 and nowadays a LOT of more experimental and even bizarre genres (such as speedcore, extratone, 200step, glitch and so on).
You don’t sound very Xtreme!
9/11 killed our culture.
