Community rules (click to expand)
1. Follow the site-wide rules
- Instance-wide TOS: https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
- Lemmy code of conduct: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/code_of_conduct.html
2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
- Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudoin Windows. - No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
- Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
4. No recent reposts
- Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
5. 🇬🇧 Language/язык/Sprache
- This is primarily an English-speaking community. 🇬🇧🇦🇺🇺🇸
- Comments written in other languages are allowed.
- The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
- Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
6. (NEW!) Regarding public figures
We all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations. - Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
- We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
- Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.
Please report posts and comments that break these rules!
Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Installing and running programs is wildly more complicated on Linux than macOS. On macOS there is only one way to do it: a self contained .app bundle. On Linux there are….several incompatible standards. And if you do it a different way than a specific Linux user’s preference, they will loudly complain and tell you that you’re doing it wrong. Even if it works.
noooot really, and you’re already coming in with a full head of steam.
This is only really true in the strict context of “what can happen in 2026”, and not in the context of if “ what has been historically accomplished up to today, 2026”
The difference? Pretty much 98% if POSIX apps (including the vast amount of pre-steam gaming, and a lot of current steam games), so don’t let this bitter bitch try to convince you otherwise.
@ayyy, you can complain all you like about how you don’t understand how macOS works or how it is similar and to LINUX and UNIX, but do it somewhere else that doesn’t waste the rest of our time. The rest of us are trying to come together to solve a problem. It’s clear that your only interest is in driving everyone apart, and that doesn’t solve problems. It just creates them.
And no one here is interested in that bullshit
I’m speaking from personal experience. What you and I want and actual reality are two different things. Your belligerent complaining is exactly what I was talking about, and it took less than half an hour for it to happen.
What happened?
What do you imagine just happened? The fulfillment of some fantasy imagined?
Lol
“I can’t work in fast food all my life”
Edit: let dump the pretense shall we?
State your position and your argument, and we’ll go from there. And I’m happy to dump the belligerence and the assumed contemptuousness.
The facts assume no emotion
lmao yep, you’re definitely not being extremely belligerent over nothing just like I was talking about. 👍
Certainly the most concise defense of a position I’ve ever heard, although undeservedly the weakest
Ouch, really? That’s the best you can do?
Bazinga!
(I’m from Mars, so this a fresh and current reference!)
Oh, buddy… Way to drop the ball…
Not gonna even slap him in the face about Chinese slave factory workers? Children killing themselves?
Nothing?
Wow…
What are you even talking about? What does this have to do with installations on Linux? Or are you just riffing off of their belligerent unhinged replies as a bit?
sudo -y eat-meSo, you never heard of Apple?
They’ll probably do it similar to what steam does. Steam has learnt a lot there over the years. It’s definitely a pro if it can be easily repackaged, paths configured and they follow the desktop standards, but it will also work without. People will certainly complain if they have to fix stuff themselves
Aw hey now, I believe the community can be open-minded about this!
...As long as it's not Snap. 😂
