It's not that it needs to be online. It's that it's chatting with Microsoft about you while it's doing it. They're going to know everything you install, every webpage you go to, everything you do.

I have a home network with mostly ancient Macs.. I have one that's got a G4/Tiger-specific scanner and printer that direct connect to said "wind tunnel" MDD PowerMac that is on once a year, if that. (I use it to do film scans and make prints with the fancy bespoke software for that particular OS/hardware combo..) I have NEVER attached the printer to the network, (since it's so old) it's directly to the USB on the G4, yet somehow, Windows saw the printer AND scanner - how? - and has them in the queue for devices on the network. I don't know if it's the MacOS X SMB filesharing or what, (on Tiger, 10.4.11 from 2004?) that got the G4 to barf up it's devices list to the PC. I just.. yeah... no.

Fucking creepy-ass, snooping, Microsoft man.
