If you want depth of field then that's doable with eye tracking with foveated rendering which in addition tracks your eyes' focal point with active global lens adjustment

Because the only practical alternative is light field displays, which are NOT trivial. We're talking stacks of prism arrays and stacks of transparent displays or multi-laser projection + stacks of waveguides, etc

Yeah, I was referencing light field displays. I think we'll eventually see an attempt at a commercial VR unit with light field displays, but I think it's about a decade away before the first one goes on sale. They also have the added difficultly of needing even more renders from the GPU.

The lense adjustment would still mean that objects at different distances would still all be at the same focal plane, but that the focal plane would change depending on what you're looking at. I bet it's probably good enough for most people, but I've never heard of it before so I'll look into it.

If you want reference for the current state of the art in image quality, the Apple Vision Pro "eye window" display is a light field display.

So to do better you need to outspend Apple, by a lot

How many places can you find which describes light field displays as something different than the 2D array Apple made with that lenticular design to create unique images for every viewing angle?

If Apple had a better light field display tech available at reasonable cost they would've used it

I can't find a single place that even claims it has what you describe. It uses 2 micro OLED displays. I see nothing about it "creating unique images for every viewing angle."

An outward-facing OLED panel on the headset's front uses a lenticular lens that Apple says projects "the correct perspective of your eyes to each person looking at you."

Correct perspective = different per outside viewing angle. This is exactly the purpose of light field displays.

It is worth mentioning that Apple Vision Pro’s EyeSight [Kim et al. 2023] also utilizes the lenticular lens displays to project the correct viewing angle of the virtual eye images onto each person observing it.

I think you have holographic light field displays in mind. That's the more advanced and high detail version, but this too projects a light field although a much simpler and lower detail one.

And if you're talking about the inner screens, that's not the topic here (I clearly mentioned the "eye window"). The inner displays just use standard VR optics.
