I use a polycarbonate 'pad' (Amazon link).
It's incredibly thin (.5mm) and more than large enough even if you play low DPI/eSports. Most importantly, for your situation, is that it is adhesive backed... so it sticks to your desk and isn't so easy to steal. It's got a light matte texture which I only notice when my mouse needs new feet. If you're using PTFE dots like OP it'll be glass smooth. Since it's so thin it doesn't irritate my wrist like some of the cloth pads with the heavily stitched edges.
The downsides that I've noticed are 1. Adhesive backing isn't for every surface or portable so make sure you know where you want it before you apply it. 2. After 3 years of gaming the middle area is starting to become polished... while it makes the pad incredibly smooth it can sometimes cause tracking errors. (A bit of light sandpapering introduces enough surface defects to fix this) and 3. Since it's not cloth or absorbent in any way it can build up dust/skin oil residue. It's very easy to clean though (being polycarbonate it's resistant to essentially anything you would want to clean it with) and, as a second option, fingerless arm sleeves/"gaming gloves" eliminates the skin oil issue (and is a bit more comfortable if your pinkie drags when using your mouse.)
I've got massive hands and so pinky/thumb drag is a real big issue. You make a tempting suggestion I'm gonna look into.
