Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Donald Trump asked the Smithsonian Institution to install a 30ft “Colossus statue” of George Washington outside the National Museum of American History, and a special exhibit honoring the nation’s first president, in a social media post late on Friday.

The president requested that the exhibit continue through February 2032, the 300th anniversary of Washington’s birth.

“He is easily America’s Greatest Hero. Without him, our Country and our Freedoms wouldn’t exist,” Trump posted on Truth Social as he flew to his golf course in Ireland.

The statue of Washington would replace the current Infinity sculpture by New York artist José de Rivera, commissioned by the federal government and installed in 1967.

And he can just do it without the parliamenarian, without a supermajority, without asking every member of the DEA first.

In theory, we have all these checks in place to stop this sort of thing. In practice, they only function to stop things that might help Americans.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In theory I don't think we really do though. When you get to a position as high as the president I think the assumption is that we wouldn't elect such an irresponsible insane moron.

I mean yes, there are checks and balances, but consider for a minute enforcement. The judicial branch barely has anything to compel somebody to behave.

Unfortunately we're in a position where the president will literally just say "make me." We're dealing with an unprecedented world where the leader of the country literally needs repercussions for his actions or he'll do whatever he pleases.

The checks didn't stop the arms sales for genocide under biden either.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you think we are anywhere near the antics of any other president you are insane.

It had a pretty serious whatabout feeling to it.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I'm lamenting that our government, regardless of who is in charge, can only seem to accomplish evil actions and is stringing us all along with false promises of improvement that there's always some stupid flimsy excuse for not doing.

If you want to defend biden in that context because trump is worse, that's up to you. I think all that happens when you pretend half of the abusive system isn't rotten is complacency when the "good" half is in office.

We cannot defeat fascism if our leaders aren't interested in doing so.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You just managed to stumble on the opposite of what I was saying. Congratulations, I suppose?

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I forgot democrats are always perfect, especially when they do the same shit I hate republicans for. Sorry. Please block me so you never have to see my blasphemy again.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Still missing the point. But now I get this cool sort of pity party out of you, so that's fun, I guess.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So what is your point? Because it sure looks to me like it's "republicans bad, democrats good even when they act like republicans."

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I made my point pretty clear originally. We have a president in office with an absolute reckless abandon for the law to the point where he's bombing indiscriminately kidnapping world leaders, raping women and children, and threatening to take over our allies.

Whataboutisms in this sort of circumstance are absolutely absurd. JD Vance just got on television and boasted that every day they have multiple Watergate scandals going on.

Even if he went straight to the big guns and brought out fucking Nixon or Reagan, I'd still tell you that it has nothing to do with the conversation to hand.

And by the way, just so I'm completely clear, fuck Joe Biden and fuck the Democratic Party. They're part of the reason why we're here.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I'm not whatabouting for trump just because I also hate biden.

Both broke all the laws they wanted to break with impunity. It's just that biden only wanted to break the Leahy law. This didn't start with trump and another genocide wing democrat won't stop it, because they would have to stop supporting genocide.

Now call me a trump supporter some more.

Holy shit, I'm impressed with sir. Without any real prompting, you just came and immediately, whatabouted me. XD

What you're doing is essentially watching an arsonist light up a building full of people and then walking down the street with a stern expression because somebody's jaywalking. We are talking orders of magnitude difference like end of a civilization sort of difference.

Now call me a trump supporter some more.

I'm not going to say I did or didn't because I don't care enough about this conversation to scroll back. It seems to me a lot more to you than it does to me. But I don't think I use those two words in the same sentence.

But I don't know, man. Go ahead and keep feeling bad for yourself or whatever.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yes, I suppose genocide is only as bad as jaywalking to you.

It seems to me a lot more to you than it does to me.

I've spent from 2024 to present being called a trump supporter by biden's genocide worshiping simps for not loving the genocide you all live for. Keep feeling happy about the genocide. At least trump didn't stop what biden started, I guess.
