Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

I was thinking about IPoAC the other day and had a horrifying realisation of it's implications: teleporting someone will involve moving enough data to reconstitute an identical human being from the sending to the recieving teleporter, and assuming storage technology grows in a similar way, there will be a point where it's faster to be downloaded to a drive, strapped to a pigeon, and flown to your destination for reconstitution than it will be to wait for the data to transfer over.

You would also have to trust there is only one receiver, hackers would instantly try to break in any way they can to steal certain people's

Stargate has entered the chat

You are somehow assuming

  1. the amount of data to reconstitute an identical human being would increase in meaningful quantities over time
  2. transfer bandwidths are not also growing to the point where finite amounts of data are transmitted between two points faster than a pidgeon can fly

Did you confuse this with the scenario of average bandwidth?

[–] Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No, the assumptions are that it would be a static but massive amount of data and that transfer bandwidths grow slower than can keep up with storage volume, which is why there would be a point rather than multiple ones. At some point the bandwidth would outgrow the data and forever more be faster at the task than IPoAC.

You phrased that weirdly then. As if that point would be in the future, with an initial phase of transfer by radio.

Btw, that "IPoAC" could then easily be replaced by putting a human on a plane :p

It would be in the future, we haven't invented the means to either scan or reconstitute a human yet.

And sure, but we're talking about IPoAC, not sensible things.
