Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Under the hood there is this thing in there called "systemd" that does a pretty good job making Linux work, and has made some people happy and some other people unhappy.

Before systemd there was something called "init" or maybe "system v" that wasn't as good at systemd, especially not at restarting things if there was a problem, but it was real fast and less complicated.

This is not part of the Linux kernel though, i have no idea how that works.

Can i be dewey, but with the glasses?

Closeβ€”a few other people use a different init system to be extra niche. There are tens of us! Tens!

I think most of the hate came from logging and that it went binary instead of just another file

Also I believe the whole "violates unix principles" thing. the one in question:

Make each program do one thing well. To do a new job, build afresh rather than complicate old programs by adding new "features".

systemd just acquires more and more features. But then that was written in the 1970s. Things have changed, we have so much more going on in our computers, it's easier to delegate a bunch of housekeeping work to a single, more centralized tool.

Using OpenRC or another init system instead means you get more fine grained control, but it also means you need to choose a bunch of utilities, whereas systemd just has a lot of them out of the box. And at the end of the day that's just for power users to worry about, I suspect many end users will never be able to tell the difference between an OpenRC distro and a systemd distro given that both configure everything they need to use it.

Most of the hate came from people that don't even read logs nor know what they talk about. You can read journal with strings from binutils, you can forward to syslog server and store it in whatever format you prefer, you can do a lot of things with journal tbh. (Journalctl is horribly slow, that's true)

This is a very dewey answer. Yes, you can have the glasses.
