Im looking at the org babel WORG webpage on running shell code and it says there that we can run shell command asynchronously. However, when I try some of the examples in my machine, the async is completely ignored. Am I supposed to install something else?

You need ob-async but it's broken on later org versions. There are some unmerged pull requests in the GitHub that can fix that.

Does this require building org-mode itself?, or can it be fixed in a simpler way?… I connect to remote systems so asynchronous is a must

Built-in async support for shell source blocks is not yet released. It is only available in the development version of Org mode.
