Probably a noob question, but I wonder if someone has experience with that. I am looking to buy a TV and I wonder is it makes sense to buy one with decent HDR capabilities, when my plan is to watch pirated movies from my Linux device via HDMI. Is that technically possible? Is it easy?

If it matters, I am on Fedora silverblue.

MPV has excellent HDR support on Linux. I don't have any HDR displays, but so far it has properly tone mapped every HDR format that I've tried.
