In rural areas, Air Canada will cancel the 2 morning flights so that they can send a full flight in the evening. Too many missed connections

I've been on a few rural flights in Northern Ontario. I can totally see why they'd cancel low population flights. I imagine fuel consumption at cruising speed is reasonable, but takeoff and landing cannot be fuel efficient, and those flights last like 30mins. It's likely not even actually worth the fuel cost, but a requirement put on them by our Govt (as they should, obviously).

Be pretty interested to see the profitablity break down for those flights.
