I'll go with a role player, Javale McGee. I remember watching this dude as a first and second year player. He had all the tools but was dumb as rocks. I figured he would be out the league after his rookie contract. But props to him, he embraced being a role player and has been playing for like 15 years. So many players can't get over not being the star and wash out.
He was always pretty severely out of breath in his early career because of his asthma. That probably took up a lot of his though processing
Imagine you’re John Wall. Your first ever year in the NBA and you step into a locker room that has Nick Young, Gilbert Arenas, Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee you end up thinking this is the normal way a locker room interacts.
“You mean you guys don’t shit in y’all teammates shoes?”
It’s so funny because from what I’ve heard he’s actually brilliant at basketball. Maybe not cp3 level but well above average by many accounts. It’s his lack of ability to connect the mental and physical
When he makes a mistake I call him Javale Magoo.
"Dammit, Magoo! Just kick it out!"
The Warriors really revitalized his career.
Honestly when he got to Denver right after the wizards he was trying really hard to change his reputation. He still made boneheaded plays, but I remember they used to have to sub him out cause of his asthma and he was hustling too hard. Dude just didn't have the coaching he needed earlier with the wizards
That year Javale made the playoffs with the Nuggets and Swaggy P made the playoffs with the Clippers. They both played meaningful minutes. It was always clear to me that they were both super talented guys… the trajectory of their career was shaped by the shitshow of a locker room that the Wizards had
