Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Ok, so here is my idle thought for the day.

Restrict the power of people at the average age of death in their country. Be a jerk about it, no political positions, no company directorships, trust boards or any other position of power can be held once you pass that age.

In NZ that is 83 for women and 79 for men.

That is old; really old, to be making decisions about the future.

If billionaires want to retain power beyond that, better fund those works that make things better for everybody to bring up that average. Men, you will need to up your game as women out live you by 4 years or 5%...

Perverse incentives, maybe keeping people alive using machines etc, longer than in medically advisable....but that doesn't work on the scale of millions of people.

Edit: for clarity, I am not calling for disenfranchising the old, they would still have the right to vote.

That is the goal.

Divert spending from bombs to medical advances. Bombs/guns shorten lives medical advances lengthen lives.....

you're discounting the opportunity for countries to bomb the shit out of eachother to lower lifespan worldwide

How would that help those in power keep power?

[–] lime@feddit.nu 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

you'd not think anything current politicians are doing would keep them in power, and yet...

In my magical world where laws apply to all.

Lowering the average age would go against their interests.

my original thought was that by lowering average lifespan for all they could make people so focused on trying to live that they could make any decision they want, including repealing the law. not a very good reason though.
