I don’t even consider that a “protecting the quarterback” situation. In modern football, they’re usually calling unnecessary roughness on that hit even if it’s a receiver/running back. They’re trying to make it clear to players that blowing a guy up isn’t cool anymore and that isn’t a bad thing, no reason to hit a guy as hard as you fucking can. I know football people disagree with that but it’s true, this isn’t a combat sport. Your goal is to bring the guy down, not hurt him
