How do you get ideas, evaluate them, and decide how much to commit to this, re-evaluate it through the process, iterate, improve and eventually monetize it? Would love to hear stories from the community as I want to find a side project to work on. I have a full time job so my weekly commitment would be 8 hours at most.

Find a idea that meet user's need is really important when you try to start a side project.

My way is to use Google, because every keywords people input Google are represent a real need of them. If there is some keywords related to an idea have large search volume or upward tendency that mean the idea is Good.

My app GoTrends show search volume and their tendency in the last 48 months of every keywords, I think you could try it.
