DK Metcalf is a giant of a man who can run super fast. So in honor of DK Metcalf's 22.23 mph run this week, here are the top-20 ball carriers so far this year BY MOMENTUM*:
Results - The results show us what our eyes already saw: DK is a big dude that REALLY gets moving. Remember three years ago when he hit 22.64 chasing down Budda Baker after an interception? That was even faster than this run! This dude is huge and fast. For comparison: a 2018 Honda Civic weighing around 2,800 lbs and driving 2 mph has a momentum of 1136 kg.m/s. So this guy is basically a slow-moving car. That's nuts.
But DK isn't alone up there at the top and that's pretty cool. Jonnu Smith and Derrick Henry are both a little bigger than DK and got moving almost as fast this year in weeks 9 and 6, respectively. Their total momentum comes in just a little behind DK.
Then there's a bit of a jump in the top momentum and it's driven by player weight. DK, Jonnu, and Derrick are the heaviest guys on this list, weighing 236, 247, and 247, respectively. That next group of guys (Hall, Barnes, Fields, Robinson) are the next heaviest guys on my list and all in the 220s for weight.
Finally, there are some notable absences from this chart. Even though the Miami crew of Tyreek Hill, Devon Achane, and Raheem Mostert have had the top fastest plays this year (after DK's run this week, that is), their weights are all under 200 lbs and that puts them in the mid-800s in kg.m/s. For comparison, that's much closer to a 2008 Smart Fortwo moving at 2 mph (~750 kg.m/s). See, now I'm wondering if I'm even afraid to get hit by these guys!
I'm going to stop before I make any outlandish claims about the survivability of getting run over by a full-speed Devon Achane. I'm about to enter that foolhardy territory of which animals you could beat in a fight. I'll just leave with saying congratulations to DK Metcalf! Way to have some awesome and terrifying top momentum! And good luck this week to the Miami offensive speedsters! You'll need to either hit 27 mph or gain 50 lbs to catch up to DK. Whichever you choose, I believe in you!

*Methodology: I took the top 5 weekly ball carrier speeds as reported by Next Gen Stats and multiplied it by the player weight as reported by the team roster. For the cars I looked at a range of values from the manufacturers.
