Yeah the issue is that they're dependent on it for the rest of their lives, and technology seems break down over time without maintenance. Don't trip?

He was thrilled to learn in early 2020 that he was eligible for software upgrades that could further improve his vision.

So it can be upgraded, which means it's got a port somewhere, and guess what (probably proprietary).
