This is an off-the-cuff brainstorm to grow /c/NBA and the fediverse.

Lemmy and the fediverse have scene solid and steady growth since the reddi API-ocalypse.

However, we had a more active year our first year compared to this year (so far) in /c/NBA. Probably in no small part to the lack of high seas support on this instance.

I have been pondering on how to grow this community but also make it unique in NBA/sports fandom.

I am gravitating towards some group-oriented ideas--a little pretend gambling, a little streamlined fantasy sportsing (hyper simplified), some end of season award voting, etc.

Before elaborating on anything in particular: does anyone have some big ideas they've been sitting on they'd like to share? I will share some below as well.

Couple thoughts I have:

  • I’m definitely open to moving instances so that we can do the high seas links again. There’s also some instances that world isn’t federated with so moving to one that’s a bit more open might gain some more people so think we can gain some visibility here.
  • I like the idea for fantasy basketball and would be willing to help organize and post about it since I’m in a couple leagues.
  • For the fediverse as a whole think we may need to venture back to Reddit a bit to try to peel off some people there. We need to make sure Lemmy is known as an alternative so people know where to go as Reddit gets worse and worse.

Moving instances could be the first step, then setting some recurring (not automated) post to keep the visitors interested could be fine; I'd also try/ask to stop teams communities until we have established a nice group here, although they don't see to gain much attention

What are the meaningful unfederated communities? I'm mildly out of the loop on federation drama lately. I don't care about arbitrarily changing instances, but I will if there's enough unfederated ones we like that maybe I didn't notice defederated etc.

I’ll have to look again but I know Beehaw isn’t of the top of my head. Switching was more for the high sees part too.
