Importantly it's not a 100% ban:

“This policy emphasizes that projects on BackerKit cannot include content solely generated by AI tools,” the company said in its announcement. “All content and assets must first be created by humans.”

But honestly, that's fine with me. Use AI to create alternative scales and ratios of existing art and stuff, cool. Better than art that is badly zoomed and cropped late in production.

How do they determine if a picture is AI generated?

I am currently trying to develop my own boardgame and use some AI art for the prototype. Maybe down the road, once the game mechanics are finished I could consider getting a designer on board. But for now I will stick with this. Most assets I created myself but they look goofy.

I am guessing a lot of designers jobs are on the line if everyone just generates all the assets. Then again, designers are expensive.

Then again, designers are expensive

That's because designers can make you exactly what you want. Really good designers can make you what you didn't even know you wanted because they can ask the right questions to guide you through a process.
