It's nice to see the senate opposition functioning.

Edit: 18 hours of holding the senate floor, giving voice to the american people. Lots of tears as american suffering is read out loud for the congressional record. Testiment from Americans across the country. This is the voice of the people. Please click the link, share and watch. The media needs to know we care about the opposition more than we care about trump rambling on a plane about fort knox.

It’s unbelievable. Nothing is ever the correct way to do things. People like you always complain without solutions or even a hint of what the fuck you want.

What should he have done instead? What was the correct move for Booker here? Let’s hear it.

[–] SaltSong@startrek.website 15 points 2 days ago (62 children)

It sounds like he would have done better to start at 7 AM, but I've not really looked into it.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago (52 children)

I think it’s safe to assume he chose the time he did for a reason.

[–] Steve -3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

So you don't understand either, and are just assuming it's the most effective way to go about it.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

If I see a construction worker using a jackhammer on the side of the interstate, yes I assume they know what they’re doing until I see evidence to the contrary.

[–] Steve 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

What if they're doing it alone, in the middle of the night?
I'd hope you think that was strange at least.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

No not really actually. I see roadwork done at night all the time. They do it because there’s less need for the roads in the evening so blocking a lane or more is less impactful.

See? Sometimes these things have more nuance and logic than you might think at first glance.

[–] Steve 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

One guy.
Alone.
In the middle of the night.

That would be very strange. Just like this guy speaking to an empty room in the middle of the night.

It's nearly as strange, that you don't think it's strange at all.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

OK now you’re actually acting as if the specific details of your off the cuff metaphor are somehow truly relevant to the discussion at hand or in any way explain this situation with any level of granularity, so I’ll hold you to that: explain to me how this is like what you just described. Talk to me about how Booker is supposed to do something like this, and what is wrong with the way he did it.

[–] Steve 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't say things without thinking them through.

You came up with the construction worker metaphor. Maybe you didn't put any thought into that, I don't know.

I asked about if construction worker was working alone in the middle of the night. Just like Booker is talking to an empty room in the middle of the night.

To me they both seem strange, and unlikely to be helping much.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Where are you getting this notion that he is in there by himself talking to nobody?

[–] Steve 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

An educated guess.
Even during a session, the room is mostly empty. They don't bother listening to each others speeches most of the time. I'm sure nobody is bothering at 2am

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago

So you don't know

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Democrats have been demonstrating they don't know what the fuck they're doing to combat this fascist shut for decades now. The benefit of the doubt has passed.

Sure this was slightly better than rolling over, but this accomplished little

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You say it accomplished little yet here we are all talking about it.

How much time and energy have you spent thinking about and talking about this subject today?

How many headlines are out there about it right now?

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Think how much more we'd be talking about it if they did someone useful instead of performative for once...

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I get it's edgy and cool to shit on people doing something other than whining on forums but maybe you should just shut the fuck up and contribute meaningfully to solving the problem instead of jeering from the sidelines?

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I know it's great pretending like the usual performative shit that Democrats have been doing for years will suddenly work this time, but telling people who've seen this same exact bullshit fail countless timeless to shuf up isn't going to make it less useless this time around, either.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Corey Booker has shut down the legislative branch for the entire day. What did you do today?

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He waited 3 months to do this little playacting. This is his job. I've been doing mine this whole time. He was phoning it in up until last night. Let's not pretend this makes up for the Democrats' subservience up until now.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Oh give me a fucking break. It's only been 3 months. You're acting like it's year 4.

What the fuck have you done the last 12 weeks? You're never going to relent. I could show you Booker executing Trump on his knees and you'd go "well he should've acted sooner, the Do-Nothing-Democrat!"

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You understand that they waited until after all the corrupt agency heads were confirmed, and after the trash Republican budget was passed to pull this stunt, right?

You making moronic hypotheticals claiming you know me, because I think this obvious stunt was just that and not something helpful, doesn't make it any more helpful

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Dude, we all certainly understand this less than a sitting senator. Get off it.

Maybe 7pm is significant, maybe it isn't, but we are sitting here from our toilets still wiping the sleep from our eyes while this guy is giving a speech for 12 hours. Can we stop pretending we have any clue?

[–] TronBronson@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

He's going for the 24 hour record clearly so start time was irrelevant. He probably had a good nap before it started.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world -4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's a level of servility in this comment that is just downright distasteful.

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I show no submission to authority. The point of my post, which was meant to be a jab at the armchair politicians / optics gurus / 4d strategists in this chain who were arguing over the effectiveness of starting at 7pm.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world -3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Your argument is literally an appeal to Authority.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

His argument is that when somebody is performing their job, you generally assume they know what they are doing

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What a terrible argument that is, particularly in regards to elected officials.

[–] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Not all elected officials are the same.

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 days ago

I used a slight appeal to authority to highlight the ridiculousness of the initial argument. I'm not typing out a million different nuances / hedging everything I say.

Multiple things can be true at same time. I can acknowledge that a sitting senator obviously has some idea of what is / is not effective in terms of when / when not to filibuster while not bowing to the institution itself. Sorry I didn't add three extra paragraphs about how despite being a US senator.... Yada yada yada.
