I'm all for player welfare but there's an easy solution. Lower your wages and the clubs won't need as many matches to make money.

Unlike north american sports, footy hugely overspends on player wages. So owners need to make as many matches as possible.

I bet the players wouldn't accept a salary cap along with a match cap.
