I was making some unique loot for a low-level party I'm running a quest for this week, and my roller derby brain intruded upon my D&D brain.

'mechanism to deploy' sounds more like heelys than proper skates

True, but I can't imagine true roller skates working in a medieval context without any flat surfaces, so that made more sense to me. Plus it's more gnome-y.

believe me, i'm there for it.

it would be funny if moving past your normal range of motion triggered a (low DC) dex check that could cause you to continue til you crash if failed.
