Hello everyone, reaching out to the community for advice.

I have an opportunity to purchase the Yacht Master 42 in white gold Oysterflex. This would be my first purchase with Rolex. I have always had a preference for Cartier or Breitling, however this was recommended and wow, it’s beautiful!

However my budget is £15k, so this would put me back financially being just over £25k, it would also delay some other projects for 4 to 6 months. With that being said, it’s nothing I can’t work out, just eat beans and toast for a while haha.

I’m not even sure about insurance on this.

I would like to know what you guys think of this watch, is it a good find, a good investment etc. Would you take this opportunity and purchase?

Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated.

I would recommend against pulling the trigger here.

  1. Watches are almost never investments. They are mostly like cars - they start depreciating the moment they leave the dealer in your possession.
  2. It's excessively steep for your budget; as others have noted, you can get that watch on the grey market or secondhand for substantially less (also ties into point 1 above).
  3. Given that its list/purchase price is more than 1.5x your budget, you need to consider how it will enrich/benefit your life (my guess is that it won't, at least not in a way that would justify going over budget by that much). Note that if you had your eye on something in the 4-5k range this would not need to be a consideration.
