Hello everyone, reaching out to the community for advice.

I have an opportunity to purchase the Yacht Master 42 in white gold Oysterflex. This would be my first purchase with Rolex. I have always had a preference for Cartier or Breitling, however this was recommended and wow, it’s beautiful!

However my budget is £15k, so this would put me back financially being just over £25k, it would also delay some other projects for 4 to 6 months. With that being said, it’s nothing I can’t work out, just eat beans and toast for a while haha.

I’m not even sure about insurance on this.

I would like to know what you guys think of this watch, is it a good find, a good investment etc. Would you take this opportunity and purchase?

Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Absolutely do not buy a watch over your budget. At £15k, you can get that watch 2nd hand amongst many others

Where on earth can you buy this watch for 15 thousand pounds? Asking for myself

A watch is a "want", not a "need", so I would never advise buying a watch you can't easily afford. Save up since there will always be another watch.

That's how my dad taught me also, as long as it is easily affordable I should consider it.

I would recommend against pulling the trigger here.

  1. Watches are almost never investments. They are mostly like cars - they start depreciating the moment they leave the dealer in your possession.
  2. It's excessively steep for your budget; as others have noted, you can get that watch on the grey market or secondhand for substantially less (also ties into point 1 above).
  3. Given that its list/purchase price is more than 1.5x your budget, you need to consider how it will enrich/benefit your life (my guess is that it won't, at least not in a way that would justify going over budget by that much). Note that if you had your eye on something in the 4-5k range this would not need to be a consideration.

Prices have been coming down.

I don’t think this will change any time soon. Safe and see what happens. I love this watch but it’s not worth the asking. You might see a time where watches will sell BELOW the MSRP again.

Oh this is interesting, thanks for the info, and thank you to everyone else for commenting.

I'm going to leave it for now and continue to save for a while.

What website is this? Want to check out other watches

[–] dwm91@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Also check out Watch Charts site.

[–] emptyquant@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Chrono24. You need to register to get the historical price data.

Hold off for the rest of the year and see what 2024 looks like. Watch prices are on the decline.

No watch is worth paying for over retail. And that includes Rolexes.

You mental or what? You didn’t want this watch, this watch is almost double your budget and yet you’re asking strangers on internet if you should go ahead and buy it?!

Sure thing, do it for the sake of lolz

[–] -Athy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I am looking for a new watch and open to suggestions, again I think this is beautiful and wanted to check if it's a sound investment and I have my answers. I may consider this in a few months time, or choose something else that may come along.

[–] PandR1989@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Don’t look at this as an investment. Rolex prices are coming down hard.

[–] Semy-D@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Of course, buy a luxury piece of jewellery thats way above your budget based on the opinions of strangers on reddit, thats a great idea!

[–] Skankhunt-XLII@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dont buy a watch just because the AD is so „gracious“ and offers you the possibility to buy one

[–] Lvl3-@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Nope, like others have said save up. Never go above your budget.

[–] SXLF@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Well, when you cut through the filler the question boils down to this:

“I want a watch for £15k (because that’s what I can reasonably afford). Should I buy a watch for over £25k (just because they asked if I wanted to)?”

I wouldn’t want strangers over the internet to influence my answer to that question.

You should totally 100% go for it. Fantastic watch, fantastic investment, great price, totally worth a downpayment on a decent house.

[–] TheSinpig27@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You have plenty of choices with this budget, that is not one of them.

[–] -Athy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes, I’ve been looking at the many variations of the Submariner, some nice options. I wish the Oysterflex was available on other models.

[–] hnglmkrnglbrry@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You can't be serious. You absolutely can't afford it and you didn't even want it to begin with. Just post straight to r/watchescirclejerk next time so I don't have to see this post twice.

[–] ac_s2k@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You cant afford it... so easy no.

[–] MiddleRay@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love watches. I can afford a Rolex, but still cannot come to terms with spending that much as I think watches should around 5k. I couldn't fathom putting projects and overextending myself for a watch.

buy buy buy!

[–] Barney_Holden@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

A mind set of eating beans for a few months in return for a more expensive watch than you can afford, is the mind of a true watch fan

[–] AstraArdens@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] Storage_Ottoman@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Meh, dislike. Never understood the appeal of this one, nor do I get why the price is so high.

Even if it were closer to your specified budget I would pass. And if I actually wanted to spend in the range of a YM? There are dozens of other watches that I’d much rather have.

[–] PandR1989@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Lmao if you have to alter your diet to buy a ridiculous watch then maybe you shouldn’t do it. I’m not buying a watch if it’s costing me more than 10% of my cash reserves.

[–] Schapsouille@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Fomo is almost always a source of mistakes.

[–] SaintESQ@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Why not think for yourself?

[–] THUORN@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Never break your budget for a piece of jewelry.

[–] Lunartic2102@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dont buy something you cant afford. Save up and wait if you have to.

[–] ThatIsSillyTalk@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

“OPpURTuniTy!”

[–] mattex93@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
[–] philbart_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No, you can’t afford it.

[–] Schapsouille@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Sounds like you can't afford it

[–] guarneer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

If the beans and toast wasn’t a highly exaggerated joke, you need a reality check. It’s a watch dude. Be responsible.

[–] LegendaryCichlid@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You don’t need this watch.

[–] hugehecter@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The only rolexs I would consider at the moment(for investment) are 1’s u can walk out and instantly flip for 5-10k and with the market falling as hard as it is atm I can only see that watch falling under retail in a couple months

[–] urgilog@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s just a black watch dawg, go touch some grass

[–] 2_fuego@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago
  1. Watches are not investments

  2. Never go into debt for a watch

[–] SonicDethmonkey@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Considering that you both didn’t really want it initially and that it’s way over your budget, I’ll answer your question with another question. Why WOULD you buy it?
