IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!

Now Rodney who fired up that unstable energy chamber again after it had already fried one guy on the other hand…

Meh, imo compared to most of Star Trek or Babylon 5 it was kinda mid (even Star Wars - The Clone War was better). Just basically American mil-prop but in space.

Let me remind you of the original premise: A ~~conspiracy theorist nutjob~~ eccentric professor (thinks aliens build the pyramids, but is somehow still allowed to lecture at an university) is hired by the military to help them explore an unknown world where they have to save ~~uncivilised savages~~ helpless slaves (using, you've guessed it: guns) from an ~~evil dictator~~ all powerfull god (who still needs slaves tho).

The more I think about it, it's not even mid, it's crap. It has no wonder for what's beyond the stars, just a constant psychotic fear of anything that could even remotely be considered a danger to ~~America~~ Earth. And the only solution to it is shoot at it.

The big sci fi win in stargate is how highly they rated internal consistency and having a scientific basis where possible. Apparently that was mostly because the actress playing Carter absolutely refused to tell bullshit gobbledegook and forced the writers to do it properly.

It’s subtle, and not always perfectly followed, but if you take the episode where they gate to the black hole, they have significant screen time justifying why the time dilation is so strong when the gravitational effects are so weak. It shouldn’t work that way and they acknowledge that explicitly, but obviously they wanted a fun time dilation story so they call it out and explain it as an unexpected side effect of the gate wormhole. So sure, they sometimes make science do what they need it to do for the story, but they try hard to justify it.

Star Trek meanwhile barely follows its own rules most of the time, let alone actually acknowledging real physics

it pleases me that the actress who played Carter cared about science like the character.

They're not all that afraid of what's out there. They spend most of their time trying to make friends and messing things up by acting like American tourists.

In fact, most of the reason for why humanity is so powerful towards the end of the show is that several of the powerful species have befriended humanity and have given their tech to them.

It's still milprop but milprop that places a surprisingly large emphasis on diplomacy and dealing with people in good faith. You know, what the USA typically don't do.

the SG teams embody American ideals, while the NID embodies American history. specifically, the NID acts like '60s CIA.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 days ago

Instructions unclear: Revolt, enjoy your new dictator, and ignore the CIA agents out back unloading cocaine.

[–] pitiable_sandwich540@feddit.org 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They’re not all that afraid of what’s out there.

That's why they are always sending armed soliders first?

Milprop is often like that: Oh no we're the diplomatic good guys forced to fight. Why are they making us do this? We could've been friends, if you just ~~allowed us to install our puppet~~ signed our trade agreement. Now we unfortunately have to raze your cities and salt your fields. I hope you're sorry :'(

[–] lath@piefed.social 9 points 2 days ago

They're sending a robot with a camera first. Then it's two soldiers + two scientists.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, that argument can be applied against Star Trek too, they always send an armed warship to make first contact.

[–] pitiable_sandwich540@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They don't go in with guns/phasers ready, heck most of the times they don't even raise shields beforehand.

And they have a whole protocol and rules for this:

Before engaging alien species in battle, any and all attempts to make first contact and achieve non-military resolution must be made

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

Which is the same thing SG-1 did, make peaceful contact with weapons for defense.

Even with shields down a federation starship is still a very capable warship.

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I know, I don't hold it against you :D

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Daniel Jackson was lecturing to like five people in a hotel lobby at the start of the movie. He was a known crank. He just happened to be right.

[–] pitiable_sandwich540@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ah, okay my bad. Whatched that movie 10+ years ago and that's how I've remembered it.

[–] pwalker@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you certainly have very strong opinions about something you can't exactly remember. It's ok to be wrong though we won't hold it against you :-)

Oh absolutely, and I'll happily admit it. I know almost nothing about SG, but then again I have some strong opinions about christianity without having read the work of fiction they base their whole lives around.

I just remember that your mother should stone you to death, if you wear clothing woven from two types of fabric or sth along those lines. Who cares about details of a mediocre work of fiction?

And the military not even consulting a real scientist makes its antiinterlectualism worse lol

[–] Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Boo.

Haters gonna hate Gaters gonna gate

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If you watch too many episodes at once you realize they all end in shootouts, and then you feel sad.

[–] lath@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago

That was because we like shootouts. It's sad yes, but also fun.

"I do not understand why everything in this script must inevitably explode"

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

they named an asteroid after apophis, because the astronomers were fans of the show, and yes its also egyptian mythos irl.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

I thought these were Whitecloaks from WoT at first and then my dumbass was like "no, Whitecloaks have golden sunbursts on the chest of their uniforms, not red. Wait, what about The Hand Of the Light? No, that's crimson shepherd's crooks, not sunbursts"

That continued for a while before I noticed their fucking guns

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I’m still upset that this was canceled.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

It’s called Raised By Wolves. It was on HBO Max before Zaslov took over. He scrapped it completely and pulled it off the platform. I think it’s on one of those free ad-supported channels now.

The show is produced by Ridley Scott and his production company Scott Free Productions .

It’s quite hard to describe. At its core, it’s a sci-fi series focused on a couple of androids who are sent to raise human kids on another planet when Earth is destroyed by a religious war.

Beyond that, it’s like someone took LSD before writing the weirdest sci-fi shit they could think of. I mean like:

Tap for spoilerandroids giving birth to flying snakes, acid aliens storing babies in their chest cavity, and people turning into trees

I don’t even know how to describe it without spoilers because it’s so wild. I absolutely loved it.

[–] RamSwamson@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 2 days ago

As someone who did watch it on acid, fully agreed. I had to rewatch it sober because I thought the whole show had been a fever dream. It was even trippier sober.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Okay I think I might have watched the first episode or I watch at least the preview for it and it was one of those shows that I wanted to watch but I've got so many that it just hasn't gone to that point yet. Guess I'm going to have to dig that out here soon.

[–] xylol@leminal.space 1 points 1 day ago

I had watched the first half of the first episode and then got called away for something and didnt go back until about a year later when people recommended it. I restarted the episode and almost stopped again but then the ending just went off the rails and I got much more interested

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Do give it a watch but don’t rush. They cancelled the show before ending it so it’s very unsatisfying.

[–] smiletolerantly@awful.systems 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I liked the first 80% of the first season, and stopped watching halfway into S02E01. Is it worth continuing? Do we get any answers? Are they satisfying?

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No. The show is cancelled before they wrap up anything.

Personally, I’d still watch it anyway because the show is so goddamn weird you can’t find anything like it anywhere else.

For anyone reading who hasn’t seen it, I would describe it as the most metal (🤘) show I’ve ever seen.

[–] smiletolerantly@awful.systems 2 points 2 days ago

ALright, thanks for the recommendation :) And yeah, "weird" and "metal" are good descriptions. Additionally, the backstory we got in S1 was definitely "fire".

[–] Soku@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Could anyone please name the show? Ppl in the know keep referring to it as the show but could the oblivious ones get into the inner circle as well, please?

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

That looks kinda like the guy who played Ragnar in "Vikings."

(cautiously checks for weird things like too many fingers, armor features that make nonsense, or other visual anomalies before cautiously asking...)

What's this from?

It looks pretty rad.

[–] SrNobody@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

Appreciate it, thanks! :D

[–] booty@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think this is from Raised by Wolves, which is a wacky ass scifi thing.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

Much appreciated! Have always loved wacky ass sci-fi things! :D

Watching the two on the left go from hardnosed atheist commandos to saying “Praise Sol” with conviction, what a wild fucking trip of a show.
