“No return ticket? That’s suspicious, you won’t be allowed to enter.”

Yeah, that was one of my most brick shittingests moments when I decided to migrate, planned how to leave my life in europe, made it so that all my possessions fit in one luggage and backpack, VISITED MY FRIEND IN DENMARK as a final goodbye like an idiot, and when I was trying to check in at Copenhagen airport "Do you not have a return ticket? Some countries don't let you enter without a return ticket" I shat a brick.

(EDIT : What the fuck was I meant to do in a completely foreign country with all my posessions, and my mate going to work who needed his own space and his own life? Oh yeah, ditch work and let me back in because I have no idea what the fuck to do anymore?)

I got allowed through because the country I moved to is based 😎

European countries have done the same for a long time though. Your Schengen visa application can easily be declined if you do not show that you have accomodations and a return ticket already taken care of. It's not a strict automatic rejection afaik, but it's most definitely not unheard of. It's also common for the border police to ask to see your return tickets, depending on your... appearance.

Now this would depend on you having the cash available to do this but couldn't you just buy a refundable plane or bus ticket? That way you'd have an outbound ticket but could refund it later if you get a visa extension or visa reclassification.

Again, the moment I found out about this rule was when was trying to check in. I figured that I'd visit indefinitely, try to get a job, and my job could assist me in getting citizenship. So yeah, I could have done that, if I knew it was required. It's usually how visa overstays work, so people do game the system from time to time.

Turns out this place is very based... kinda. Visa free visits for 90 days, if you need to stay longer you just do a day trip to a neighboring country. You can just get a job with no problems, and THEN apply for residency, at which point you CAN'T leave without a return certificate.

So no need to do that kinda stuff.

Would you be comfortable dmimg what country this was for?

I'll just say it, it's Uruguay. I just don't like to blare it constantly.
